I stopped by a pawn shop on the way home from work, and saw these (sorry for the image quality - one day I'll get a camera):
for $29.99 each. Should I get them?
heh. (kidding - this is joke)
(edit -- despite my thread title, these are plainly MC-012, not MK-012, as you can see so clearly in the picture -- I don't know the difference, though)
OK - I compulsively bargain with these folks, so I ask if they'll take $50 for both -- they huddle and say yeah, but *with* tax. Oh, OK. This is not the same place where I got the C414B-ULS for $99 a couple of months ago (and didn't have the inclination to bargain on that one), or guilt would be setting in.
Anyway, I've got them here and I did the pink noise matching exercise with them. There's about a 7db discrepancy around 150hz, and it's pretty good other than that. Not perfect, by any means, but probably close enough for me. Neither appears to have been modified, and the electronic components are visually similar when you open them up.
Also a few months ago, I was lucky enough to get my first MK-012 with a complete set of capsules on close out at GC for $50. On that one, I replaced the capsule coupling capacitor with a 1000pf poly, and I like the change in the sound -- I've got a few more of those capacitors, and I think the tolerance is pretty good.
My question: if I replace the coupling capacitors on both of these with two of my tight-tolerance polys, do I risk blowing their fairly good stereo matching?
