Mixing Volume

Is it best to mix at the highest volume possible? My mixes sound pretty good, at a moderate level, but at higher volumes they seem to start to distort. I know that a good set of ref. monitors, and the room dynamics will make a huge difference, ( I'm mixing on my Altec Lansing computer speakers...) but thats what i have to work with right now. So I know i need some moitors, but the mixing at higher volumes is my real question. At higher volumes you should be able to hear the details of the track more clearly right. Thanks

Many engineers monitoring level for mixing is somewhere between 75-90dB SPL.

85dB is where the ear's response is most linear (according to Fletcher-Munson)... and many mix around that area........

You definitely don't want to be mixing at high levels (although you should check you mix at various levels for short periods.)
