Hi everyone,
I am new to the board and glad to be among such knowledgeable people. I hope that you will rub off on me. I have had a Boss Br-8 for about a month. I am running a line from the br-8 to the auxillary jack on an akai boombox to play back and mix down to a cassette. It really sounds good through the akai when I just play the BR-8 but when I listen to the recorded cassette tape I hear the dreaded hiss and a some distortion. And the thing never sounds as loud or clear as the BR-8. I actually have the stereo volume on 28 just to hear good and it only goes to 30. I have messed with EQ levels, reverb and delay, and higher and lower volumes on the BR_8 and akai stereo. It's starting to get to me.
Question: Do I need something else to help the mix down sound as good as what I record on the BR-8. A friend of mine said I may need a seperate mixer but I just wanted to check with yall. Thanks for the advice and patience. Later.

Your post is prime example why flat response monitors are needed for one to monitor their mix.
Also you say you are mixing down from the BR8 to the auxiliary jack of your Akai boombox? First you will come across signal degradation by mixing down to an aux jack and also it would be rather difficult to control your stereo paths by using that technique. Do you have another form or recording medium you can mix down to such as a c/d burner (standalone or pc based?) By sending your digtial signal to
a portable cassette recorder will certainly add hiss to your music. Perhaps you can borrow a friends c/d burner or you can rent, buy or borrow a better tape deck. Are you using any compression? When I finish a demo, I like to "audition" it on my car stereo, boom box, home stereo etc
to see what it sounds like in other play formats.
Good luck.

Thanks Misterqcue for the quick and helpful response.
First, what are some good flat response monitors and how would they hook into the BR-8? What would power them? I have a PA system, can I make use of it anyway?
Second, can you recommend a good CD-burner? I have talked to others who have one and that seems to be the best option. If I buy one, will I need or do you recommend any other equipment? Like the compression, are you talking about an compressor unit like bass players use?
thanks again and have a great day

Hey there
I use a set of Roland monitors that i got for under 100$. I run a line from the out of the br8 straight into the speakers. When ii first bought the br8 i also mixed down to a tape and eventually decided that if i went ahead and spent the money on digital i would go digital till the end, Otherwise your selling yourself and the machine short. You want your stuff to sound as clean from beginiing to end. I bought a stand alone cd burner from philip for under 500$ and it sounds great, (Also when i use my speakers with it i have a great sounding stereo system!)
So thats my bit

Thanks Shana

Thanks Shana for the nice, helpful reply. I am checking into the cd burner and rolands as I write.
