Mixing, the basics?

Sup BBS, Im new to this game. Simple question I think, Looking at mixing. Any technique, Im just trying to get down the basics. Like, Where the kicks should be placed in the mix etc. Thanks first, Id appreciate any help.

skye, I'd be happy to tell you everything there is to know, but our moderator's already done it. do a search for sonusman's thread on mixing.

there are so many ways to mix a song, so there are no rules as far as panning......you may wanna thumb through "the Art Of Mixing" by David Gibson....gives many many visual examples.....

with modern rock/pop, its pretty safe to say that more often than not, straight up center for lead vocal,lead guitar,kick,snare,and bass guitar......guitars are usually panned out.......
 
Whatever you do, don't mix whisky and vodka pure... It's a bad combination...

And try to get an idea of what frequencyband has which meaning on which kindof sound. There's some nifty diagrams out there... Mixing is actually different things. First you gotta know how to work with EQ, work with compressors, reverb,.... All part of the total package, so you might wanna take a look at those subjects too...
