Mixing Showdown?

I was just thinking how cool it would be, if say an 8 track mix could be downloaded from a website for people on the forum to mix on thier own equipment then post thier mix for others to listen to. Like one for 001 users, one for Cakewalk....etc.
I know in Pro Tools tracks are saved as individual files and timestamped. Would it be possible to compress the data and accomplish this? I don't know, it just sounds like fun.
 
The question is... does anyone want a piece of ME? :)
I plan on setting up a deal sometimes around new years where I'll make a song with with about 16 dry tracks on it, burn each track on CD as wav files, and have a mixing contest. The people that participate will pay for the CD and to have it shipped to them (about $2 I'm hoping) and an additional $1 entry fee. Then, the people that are NOT participating will vote on the final mixes of the people that are participating, and the winner will get the best mic that the entry fee's can afford. Hopefully nothing short of a Sennheiser MD-421. Maybe a used one, if need be.
Could this happen?
 
The raw tracks would be the sticky part of the equation. Maybe a third party to generate the raw tracks who is not in the "competition". But in any case, it sounds like a hoot to me.
 
Sounds like a great idea to me...

I'm going to participate and pan everything to the left and see how long it takes everyone to figure out that the mix is what's fucked up, not their speakers.
 
Are WAV files read by most brands of recording software? If so, I like the CD idea. I have an all anaolg studio right now, but I should have a DAW set-up within a few months.You can bet I'll participate. Does anyone work in a studio? If you do, maybe you could score some old sessions and have those be the song to mix. Just a thought. Anyway, I hope it happens.
 
Didn't something like this occur before??

I seem to remember a thread that went on forever and some heavy hitters went through this for bragging rights.
There was alot of discussion about the tracks, minimum requirements for quality, and certain consistency of finished product to be fair.

Anyone remember that???????
 
Hi, can someone enlighten me to something. If the tracks are flat, dry etc. as a reference for the mixers, what is the reference for the judges. Each mix is from a different room. Each Judge is in a different room. Each judge would be hearing the same mix differently. Is this correct?

OK, I like where this is going. I know I'm new here but the internet never enters my audio computer which is where I've been for the last couple years.

I REALLY like this idea and would love to answer Rick's question. Rick, havent i seen you on the Tascam forums?

1. Anyhow, I think the mixes could be judged by anyone who did not enter into the contest and is a member of the home recording website.

2. Next the contest would have to take only as many entries as mix CDs sold. This would ensure a decent prize corresponding to the number of participants involved. Which brings me to the next point...charge $5. Most people interested could afford it and a dollar could go to the duplication/postal guy.

3. Collect mixes and display them at random to prevent ear/eye bias issues. Hold a contest of four or five mixes (unlabeled besides#'s) a day until the entries run out then hold a final round with all the mixes decided daily.

At four dollars an entry the prize should be substantial. Also I think in the spirit of the website (HOME recording) professional mixers should be prohibited from entering...or at least winning the prize.

I guess we need volunteers, maybe moderators?

Hello, and do I call you Jake Owa or just Jake.:D Anyway hi, yea, I'm the guy who has the homebuilt console. Sounds like you have the answer to the contest. Although I'm not set up for digital. Analog takes my time up making cables:D Did you ever get your patchbay wired? Sounded like a nightmare to me. I only have 3 at the moment, but I'm getting ready to synch up my second 16 track. Crap, more cables, more patchbays, more, more, more. How fun:cool:

No, I haven't got the console running yet but I've a couple good leads and lazieness is my only enemy on that now, it's going to be the tenth time I've attacked it.
Jake is fine the username was already so I used my tenative companies acronym after my name.
From where I am in this home recording game 16 tracks is all I'll ever need (not recording def leopard). But keep the TASCAM site posted on the progress with synching I'll be needing advice on the subject eventually.

Thanx for the thumbs up on the contest. I'm afraid an analog version of the contest would be too expensive/time consuming to be realistic. A digital sesion would be easy if all the wavs were cut to the same length. It would be great if an old studio guy would convert an old analog ses. to dig for re-mixing by this group, but that's probably too much to hope for. How do we get this rolling? I'm worried the idea will putter out...it's exciting.

I've been planning on hosting this for over a year... just waiting for the right project to come along and then its happening... I'm thinking around new years...
 
I'm working in analog too, so I won't be submitting a .wav.

I wouldn't mind judging.

Good luck with your console. I remember reading that thread. That sounds like loads of work.
