Mixing question?

Should the Main Effect (the effect used to add effect to the entire mix) be used during the mixing process at all or should you only use the effects option on each individual track? If the Main FX should not be used during the mixing process when should it be used? Thank you...

ok....when mixing should I had effects (EQ, delay, compression and so on) to the Main overall recording (all the tracks at once) or only to each track?

Also, if I am going to use a limiter and/or commpression, when are these used? Are these supossed to be added to the entire mix of tracks or the main file after you have mixed everything?
 
You EQ what needs to be EQ'd the way it needs to be EQ'd. You compress things that have too wide of a dynamic range to fit the rest of the mix.

Start at the core and work your way up - Core, track, group, mix. Fix things as early as you can, generally speaking.

Delay, verb, most modulation effects are going to be auxiliary sends from individual tracks.
 
Put effects where they are needed. If you don't know whether or not they're needed, you have a little bit more reading to do.

You can use a limit or compressor in real-time or post-recording. I prefer applying these after recording unless i want to modify something. But im not totally clear what your talking about :confused:
 
Sounds like he's talking about using effects on the master bus. Using eq on the master bus during mixing would be a very bizarre thing to do. Some engineers do use compression on the master bus, sometimes even during mixing.

The tone of your question sounds like you need to understand some basics first. If so, I'd recommend holding off on using anything at all on the master bus. Just practice basic mixing for a while.

I think the Master Bus might be what I am talking about. In my recording software (Mixcraft) it is called "Main FX".

I have done some recording for one song and I am trying to mix it and really have no idea where to begin. You can check out what I have recorded so far here: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=481840

The only thing the song is missing is a Bass track. There is one Beatcraft drum track, 2 guitar tracks panned left and two guitar tracks panned right. The three vocals tracks are panned even (in the middle).

There is no FX on any individual track. On the Main FX I used EQ and the Master Limiter. That is the only "mixing" I did. Please let me know what you or anyone who would like to listen to the song thinks and what can be done to make it better.

This is my first attempt at home recording. The style of music is not for everyone but it is what I like.

I like your song. I don't think it sounds that bad(recording wise, song is really cool). I like your guitar tone especially on the left side. Maybe just cut back on teh distortion a little to make it sound a little cleaner. Did you record all 4 guitar tracks or just record two guitar tracks and copy paste each one?

The heavier ones (I think the ones on the left) were recorded by me and my buddy recored the other two on the right. We recorded all four guitar tracks and I sang all three vocal tracks. Two heavy vocal tracks and one was more of a screemed vocal track.

I am sure there is allot of noise that needs to be removed but I have no idea how to remove it.
 
Great tune....not my style, but I got to say it sounds pretty good for a mix. I'm a newb as far as mixing goes but I usually mixdown from 8 Track to 2 track and apply reverb and compression during that mixdown. Then I use my recording software (Sound Forge) to eq the final 2 track (if it needs it). I think other software like Adobe Audition has a noise reduction feature you can use on individual tracks or the overall mix. Good luck with the bass - it's my downfall......lol. Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your tune....
