I'm trying to find some sort of "cliff notes" on really good ways to EQ and fix up my recordings. I want to find a good tutorial on more towards vocals (keep in mind it typically screaming). Does anyone have any links? I have read several links, i have the recording book for dummies, several other small books but nothing has completely gave me the step to step to getting it to be perfect.
Seems to me that the original post was about instructional resources. Certainly these boards are one source, but as you can see they can generate a lot of debate. There are a few books like "The Mixing Engineer's Handbook" by Owcinski (sp?)
The problem is that reading only gets you so far. There are no formulas. For example, you cannot just tell someone to boost 3dB at 5kHz on a vocal because while sometimes that sounds great, other times it is a disaster. There are presets, starting points, and guidelines, and these are important to understand. But it's just as important to understand their origin. Using them blindly will almost surely make things worse.
As Massive said, you really have to know what you're listening for. If you know what you want, then you'll know what to do. So the question is - how do you learn what to listen for? You can do lots of experimenting yourself, learn from videos, or learn from someone else in person. I recommend lots of all three, especially the experimenting part.
DVDs I'm aware of are "Mix it like a record" by Charles Dye, a couple at
www.audioinstruction.com with Shane Wilson and Russ Long, Tony Sheppard has one, Bruce Miller has some free stuff at
http://bamaudioschool.com/. I'm sure there are lots of others. I don't think any of these are screamo/metal specific.
Not trying to be cagey, but bottom line is it takes a long time to learn all this stuff so don't expect overnight success.
