I'm a big fan of Andy Wallace's mixes and anything mixed by him seems to be outstanding. I usually buy a CD based on the fact that he mixed it. I notice on some CDs no mastering is mentioned so I imagine he masters also sometimes. Has anyone had any experience with him?

I am a big fan of Andy Wallace as well. I would love to sit in on one of his mix sessions! I doubt he masters any of his own stuff, especially since its almost all major label work. But I have actually had a chance to hear one of his mixes before and after mastering and there was very little difference. Mastering boosted the level a little and made it a tiny bit brighter, but aside from that, not much. One of my mastering guys just mastered a track that was Mixed by Tom Lord Alge, and he said that all the track needed was to raise the over all level a little bit and it was done.

So in other words........

His mixes are so close to finished it requires no EQ at all, just raising the output and it's done? Wow, if only I could accomplish that. I'm about ready to drive off a cliff working on my own stuff. I wish he offered training.

Yup. That's correct.

I'm pretty sure for the right $$$ he'd train a monkey to mix. But with that money you could probably get your room treated and all the gear you wanted for your stuff and just go with trial and error....
