I record on track one only...all others shut off...then when i play back the sound from trk one is on 3,5,7 too...how do i do this??

The DMT-8vl can record up to 2 anolog sources separately at one time. On the unit you have 2 buses, called the stereo bus. 1 of them is the left bus and the other is the right bus. Think of the bus as a signal path or in simpler terms think of the bus as picking your signal up from the mixer section and delivery it to the recorder section.
When you plug an instrument or microphone into one of the mixer channels you use the PAN knob to tell which bus (left or right) you want to pickup the signal and deliver it to the recorder.
Now on the recorder section you have a row of buttons that are labeled "Record Track" below the LCD screen that read as follows:
1L 2R 3L 4R 5L 6R 7L 8R
You press these buttons to tell the recorder which track to record on. The L means that tracks 1,3,5 and 7 get their signal from the left bus. Tracks 2,4,6 and 8 get their signal from the right bus. When you press these buttons the coresponding track number will flash on the LCD screen telling you that that track is ready to be recorded.
This is where you are probably having the problem, You need to make sure that you have only one track ready to record on at a time for each of the buses.
You CAN record more then 2 anolog sources at a time. You need to remember that there are only 2 buses to pickup the signal from the mixer and deliver it to the recorder so everything you send on the left bus will be mixed together and everything you send on the right bus will be mixed together! ie. make sure you have levels correct while your recording because you won't have control over the individual instruments later
Hope this cleared some things up for you.

thank you...i understand all what you said....but when i record on 1 left and 2 right...then shut them off...record on 3 left and 4 right...now playback and the result is 1 & 3 and 2 & 4 are running together...cannot single out any one trk to mix as they all run together...thanks again

Do you have the manual?
Also keep all the other faders down while monitoring and recording only one track at a time, if you have the switch playing back a track it will transfer to the new one when you have the fader up.
You may not be monitoring your playback tracks as the manual explains.
I love my DMT8VL, it is a great machine!

I think Dom is exactly right. You are not using the monitor function correctly. When you go to record an overdub you are doing a bounce with the track that you have previously recorded.
Here is what you need to do:
First I am asuming you are recording an instrument in stereo or you are recording 2 instruments at the same time. I say this because you talk about recording to tracks 1 & 2 and then overdubbing to tracks 3 & 4.
1.Record something to tracks 1 and 2.
2. Return all Faders to "0". On channels 1 & 2 return the level switch to the "H" position. Return the "input sel" switch to its center position. Return all pan knobs to their center potition, including the ones in the "MON" section of each channel. Also in the "MON" section return the "track input" know to its center section. In the "MONITOR Section" turn the "MASTER" knob to "0". I know this whole step seems to be a bit silly but if you do this step between each overdub you won't have to worry about accidently boucing tracks. It really sucks when you record a new overdub with an incredible performance only to realize you bounced other tracks into the recording! And yes, I am speaking from experience!
3. Now plug a new sound source into Channel 1 and Channel 2 if you are recording to 2 tracks and the same time. Remember you can record from ANY channel to ANY track. Just because you have something recorded to Track 1 doesn't mean you can't use Channel 1, they are two different pieces of equipment all house in the same shell.
4. Between the channel section and the recorder section you will see the "Monitor Section", make sure the switch is set to "MON". You are telling the DMT8vl you want the monitor signal sent to the headphone jack.
4. On CHANNEL 1 set the "input sel" switch to "input", if your using Channel 2 do the same. So now the DMT8vl knows we want to use the signal from the input jack of that channel.
5. on Channel 1 turn the "PAN" knob to "L", we are using that Left Bus to take this signal to the recorder section. On Channel 2 turn the "PAN" knob to "R", we use the right bus here so the 2 signals are not combined.
6. In the recorder section under "Record Track" press 3L and 4R, we have armed those tracks to record what the buses will deliver.
7. Raise the Master Fader (it's marked with L/R)to somewhere between 7 & 8 (the shadded area).
8. Press the RECORD button button once. The record LED will blink.

Monitoring the recording signal
9. Raise the input faders on the channels (1 & 2)that you have the new sound sources plugged into, to somewhere between 7 & 8. Check the levels on the LCD screen of the new sound sources. If the levels are not high enough you can use the "LEVEL" switch of channels 1 or 2 to increase the level to be recorded, BUT REMEMBER TO TURN DOWN THE FADER OF THAT CHANNEL FIRST!!! If you don't you could blow out the channel with too much input.
10. Now in "MON' section of Channel 3 turn the knob to "track 3",in channel 4 turn the knob to "track 4" you are telling the DMT8vl you want the signal you are sending to tracks 3 & 4 sent on to the monitor section so you can hear it as you are recording it. Use this same knob to adjust how much of that signal goes to the monitor section.
11. In the Master "MONITOR SECTION" turn up the volume knob to a comfortable level.
In the 'MON" section of each of these channels you can use the "PAN" knob to pan each of the sounds to a stereo image for monitoring.

Practicing overdubbing
12. Press the "PLAY" button to start the recorder. The Record LED will keep blinking, you will not be recording anything yet.
13. In the "MON" section of Channel 1 turn the knob to "track 1", on Channel 2 turn it to "track 2". Again so it sends the signal of those 2 tracks to the monitor section so you can hear while you do the overdubs. Again you can use this knob to adjust the level sent to the monitor section.
By using the Stop, Rewind & Play buttons you can keep practicing over and over your overdub with out recording.

14. Press the REWIND button while holding down the STOP button to locate the recorder to zero.
15. Press the RECORD button while holding down the PLAY button. YOu are now recording.
16. When finished press STOP. The record LED will go off.

Playback
17 Press REWIND while holding down the STOP button to return to zero.
18. Set the "RECORD TRACK" buttons to there off position, so you won't accidentally record over what you have just recorded.
19. Return the "INPUT SEL" switches to the center (off) position.
20. Press PLAY
Alvin I hope this works for you. If you don't have the manual you really should think about buying it, there is so much more stuff you will get out of this machine with all of the information in the manual. And I really don't want to type the whole manual it's 150 pages!

You took the time to detail things and now i'm on the right track...I printed your message out and following it. I was about to dump everything but not now. I am however going to sell my tascam M1508 as I don't need that with my fostex...this is all I need as several people have pointed out..Thanks again...Lionel
