mixing down to CD burner

My Dad just gave me a computer with a CD burner and a sound card with line in. To get the most out my 4-track Tascam 414 MKII, I'd like to know how to record 4 tracks, send them into my sound card, then send them back into the Tascam 4-track on one track, (or two tracks; one panned left & one panned right) to free up tracks to add additional layers.

Before getting this computer, I was considering buying a hi fi vcr for this purpose but can anyone tell me how I can do this with my computer?

First, you'll need some recording software. Some inexpensive solutions are n-track (http://fasoft.com) for $49 or Power Tracks (http://www.pgmusic.com/powertracks.htm) for $29.

Next, you'll need a stereo RCA to stereo 1/8 inch adapter cable from Radio Shack. You'll also need a stereo 1/8 inch to stereo 1/4 inch adapter cable.

Connect the RCA ends to the line out of your 414. Connect the 1/8 inch end to your sound card line in. Record. This is also want you do to burn a CD.

To send from the computer back to your 414, connect the 1/8 inch to the line out of your sound card. Connect the 1/4 inch to the stereo channel of your 414 (5/6 or 7/8).

At this point-in-time, I'm just using the CDex to mix-down. It creates a Wav. file which you can use to burn to CD using your burner software. Just name it and pull up the File(s) and burn em but only use one song per track.

To do this, you need to go to "Tools" at the top of the tool bar, pull down the menu and select "Record from Analog In."

As Chardin said, you will need an RCA to Stereo MiniPlug adapter to go from your Line Out on the 414 Mk II to the line in on the sound card. And to bounce back from the puter to the 414 MK II you will go from the Line Out on the sound card you can use either the Stereo Channels (5-6 or 7-8) as suggested by Chardin or the Sub In lines on the 414 MK II.
