Thanks for the clip!

Sounds pretty good to me. I don't know about the versatility of the thing, but it sounds pretty good.

I think this is one of those deals where everyone has a certain taste in bass tone and how to get "the" sound. I really don't think that any of the options listed is bad. Unfortunatly for me, I'm stuck even worse now! :D

Thanks to everyone who participated in this discussion...a lot of interesting insights! That's what I love about this place.

I've found that the biggest obstacle to overcome going from analog to digital is the lack of natural compression which you get in the analog process when you drive the level and saturate the tape. With digital you have to get the compression via outboard gear (or plug-in) OR just have an awesome playing technique. Bass is soooo low and somewhat boomy when I record straight to my digital workstation that I usually compress a bit on the way in and then more later if needed (usually again only if it's an uptempo number where the bass might get lost in the mix). I also end up having to cut some of the lower mids a bit (200 to 250 Hz) and a bit of the sub-bass (40 to 50 Hz) to clean up the bass line. Also helps to get those other instruments out of the bass range (roll off everything below 150 Hz in some cases).

Also about to forget to say how much the Tech21 Bass Driver DI has really helped a lot. Usually don't use it on ballads as much though.

nyaben,

Hey thanks for your input.

I've zeroed in on a D.I. as a solution to my problem. As a matter of fact today I bought a L.R. Baggs ( I think that's right, I can't read the damn logo on the box). It's called "para acoustic D.I."

It's supposed to be versatile enough to use on acoustic guitar and vocals. I just cut a bass track tonight and it was awesome. I didn't have to eq at all just compress. It has "low", "notch","mid", "pres." "treble" with a sweep on the notch and the mid.

Tomorrow I'll check it out with my acoustic but it's worth the price just for the bass sound I got tonight.

Thanks again,
Rusty K
