i'm doing some mixdown of some tracks so i can learn some mastering this is how i go about it
i record in midi and after editing whichever track can use some effect get re-recorded in audio
so i did some comparisons
i take a song on my keyboard and re-record it on cubase add some vocals then i'll mess with the faders and then go for the mixdown
the second scenario
i'll do everything mentioned above except that i'll add some effects form the keyboard then go on to mixdown my tracks.

Personally i like it better when the effect from the keyboard are added
but i'm wondering if it's good practice especially since i would like to master these songs after i've read enough tips and tricks on mastering
or should i record them dry and add the effects in cubase

Thank you for any help

There's no right or wrong way but here's my humble opinion. I prefere to not print effects on individual tracks and would rather do it mix time. If you put reverb on something that was otherwise a perfect, hard to repeat take and then later think "man, that's just too much reverb on that track", in a word, yer fucked. It' easy to add later but it's a mother taking it back off after the fact. YMMV.

thanx

yap that's what i thought i'd hear , but it's so loud and bright....
but that make perfect sense maybe that's why i do so many take at mixdown ehehe

Thank you

You should record your track dry because when you add an effect to a track you not only need to know how it compliments that track but also how it sits into the mix overall, e.g adding reverb may make a track sound great but when you add it into a mix that already has reverb from other tracks you may be saturating the mix with reverb.

steady tweaking

...instead of adding effects i'm just gonna stick to fader movement to get that great sound then mixdown......I'm learning

keeps the tips and trick coming
