LemonTree

Suck 'em and see!
An old song from about 12 years ago that I rerecorded. It's slightly punky/new wave/rock.

BLAMELESS Hi-Fi

BLAMELESS Download

Drums: Programed samples in Fruity loops
Bass: DI through desk
Guitars: Behringer V-Amp Pro
Vox; Studio Projects B1

Desk: Allen & Heath Saber 24/16/16/2
A/D Convertors: Delta 1010s (x2) + Delta 410 (x1)
Recording Medium: Cool Edit Pro
Mixing medium: Cubase SX back to the desk via Delta 1010s

Ok, I think I got quite a good mix for the music with this one. Drums never sound right (to me anyway) when there programed. I just upgraded from the V-amp to the V-amp pro so the guitars were recorder 24/44.1 via s/pdif for a change. Backing vocals, I think being drunk she just hung off the mic too much and got a lot of the room in the recording.

outboard I used; Lexicon MPX100, Alesis Microverb III, Behringer Composer MDX 2100.

Plugins I used; Antares Mic Modler to liven up the drum samples, Blockfish on snare and lead vox, Antares tube on the snare and some guitars, Amplitube on the solo,

Wrung the lot through T-Racks 24 without trying to go overboard but I probably did as usual.

....I'm just looking for some honest feedback if you have the time to spare, thanks

Alec.

Alec,

Cool track!

I enjoyed it a lot!

It kinna reminded me a bit of the Buzzcocks only much better recording then those guys ever got back in the day.

There does seem to be a bit swashing of dynamics in the drum kit and a little too dull on the top end for my tastes, listening at lower to moderate volumes.

There's a pile of bass energy around 100Hz and it does sound good but it's bordering on being muddy to my ears.

Over all, I like the energy and raw emotion factor in the guitars and vocals.

Nicely done, ol' bean!:D

I'm getting a lot of high-end clipping in there... Same as FM on the lows - Nice, but right on the edge of too much. Seems to be alot of mid to upper mids M.I.A.

Pretty cool though... :)

Ghost, thanks for the reply. I take the Buzzcocks remark as a huge compliment. I was only 7 in '76 when the whole punk thing kicked off but it made for great listening during the 80s when music was dire with that whole new romantics scene...god I hated the 80s! lol

I like this track a lot, it was always a fav. playing live. We done a live demo of it about 10 years ago that was very poor..even though we thought it was killer at the time (isn't it always the way till you put it on repeat and start picking holes in it?). Listening back in the cold light of day...yes I've overdone it again with T-Racks

John, you're right on the money as usual. I'm not blaming my ears or my monitors for the lack of mids...that's just "my sound" and as it's only a hobby I'm happy with it, although there's no excuse for the clipping....I'll get right aroung to fixing that kind Sir :)

Thanks to you both for taking the time to listen and comment.

Alec

Don't kill yourself if you can't find it - I know how some MP3 encoders just can't handle it. If it's not in there, it's probably just the MP3.

No, listening back at lower volumes in the cans today I can hear it crackling away and I don't think it would be my mp3 converter...I use wavelab 4.0 for my conversions

Listening now it may be a guitar at 2 o'clock....there's 2 guitar tracks overlaping in there...and the more I listen the worse it sounds.

Bad me for rushing this out! lol

What drum samples are you using ? sounds very good for samples.

Liked the song, but I feel that there is too much compression put on almost everything there, you should leave more sapce for dynamics.... Did you raise the hell up of the level intentionally ?What processors did you use ?

The samples are from the Pro Samples Vol 43 ~ Real Kits There's 6 different kits on the disk all with different volocity hits and I think it's 24 chromatic snares for each kit aswell. It's the only sample CD I own.

Processors, do you mean outboard effects? I listed all the gear I used above. Or do you mean the processor in my PC? If so it's an AMD Athlon 1800+ on a Gigabyte GA7VXE MOBO with 512Meg of PC2100 ram. 2x 40Gig 7200 ATA133 hard drives.

I didn't use a lot of compression when I recorded but I did use some...ok....too much on the final stereo mixdown. Thanks for listening, Gilwe

Here's a bounce. Alec - I really like your voice! (Is it you singing ??) If you do get a cleaner mix without the clipping, put it up because I've had it on really loud and the noise isn't quite so nice.

The chorus is cracking! How did you make the drums in Fruity Loops? A friend is offering to sell me a copy but I can't see how you would go about making fills etc, do you literally have to program a new groove every time you want anything like that?

Blameless is pretty nice LemonTree. The right channel is definitely clipped in 53 places, hehe, acording to Cool Edit Pro analyzer, I don't hear the clips on the left channel but it's pretty close.

The distortion is pretty evident on this side of the internet ! I 'blame' it on T-Racks, it has a final section called a clipper true enough, but if you push too hard with that thing you can overshoot it and something real fast can go thru it so it's not a brick wall. That's what I think anyway about the clipping.

Cool tune, I'd like to hear it unclipped also.
