Mixing a busy song

Hey all...

I have a guitar player partner who now lives about 200 miles away, and we've decided to keep jamming together via the wonders of digital recorders and highspeed Internet ;)

This is a song he wrote and sent down to me to add drums to...

When I sent the finished drums back to him, he said he was ready to pull the plug because he was having a heck of a time mixing it... I think he has a 16 track Korg...

Anywayz, he sent all the raw tracks back down to me and I've been trying to hammer it together in my spare time for about a week now...

There's a couple of spots that seem to either be too loud or too subdued with various instruments no matter what I'm doing, so I thought maybe my ears needed a break from it for a bit...

I was hoping you good folks could give a listen and see what jumps out at you...

All responses greatly appreciated :)

I think what might be making it hard to mix is that all the guitars sound the same. They sound like they are all the same guitar with the same pickup being played through the same amp, with some different effects and levels of distortion on each one.

This might not be the case, but that's what it sounds like to me. It makes the guitars hard to separate.

I think you hit the proverbial nail pretty square on that one...

I'm pretty sure he's just playing his Music Man through whatever amp he has now and is flavoring with various effects... In fact, he recorded all tracks with obvious reverb and chorus so we're stuck with those FX in the mix.

I had to take his lead track and split it into 3 tracks to try and bring it out via EQ during different sections... What worked in one area got buried in another...

Thanx for the listen!

Man, Dave. That sounds like a pain.. I can't listen right now. I am stuck on a ship that won't let me download anything. I will be home in less than 2 weeks. Of course, by then it won't matter... :(

Hey Eddie, I thought you were retiring soon so we could form a band? ;)

You'll have to let me know when you're back out this way... The guy who wrote this lives in Port Townsend... We might be able to whip up a Northwest Jam type thing

:)
