recently, i've had lots of peoplle come to me just wanting to record their rap's over beats.

everyone just brings beats on a cd to me, and most of the time they are mp3s from kazaa or somethin like that.

anyway, That leaves me a stereo track of the beat - and their vox. any tips to mixing their vox with this?

it's all with the C1, and it sounds pretty damn good, i'd have to say. but i'm still wondering if there are any tips. i dont know, i'll take whatever. i havn't been adding reverb, frankly because i dont really know how to add the right amount, or what specific plugin to use, etc. etc. i got sonic foundry reverb, and ntrack's reverb.

anyway, anything anyone can tell me is cool.
thanks
peace

I've been adding some mild distortion to the lead vocals. Either by adding a small amount to the main track, or by copying the track, distorting the living hell out of the copy, and then mixing that in quietly with the original dry. Just to give it a little girth and/or aggressiveness.

I definitely give the main vocal some percussive-type compression with a quick release, but I'm also very generous with the attack time (slower) to give the vocs a little more punch.

I 'll generally double track everything, even if we don't wind up using it throughout the entire song . . . perhaps doubling just during the "hook," or during parts that need emphasis.

For background parts during the hook, I like to use a bit of the "telephone" effect by cutting a lot of the highs and lows and boosting the mids kind of thing. Nothing too crazy -- I'm not trying to make them sound like Britney Spears or anything . . . just trying to mix things up a bit.

I try to keep the verbs fairly minimal. Just large room kind of stuff as opposed to church and/or grande hall kind of stuff.

Oh, and when you do the final mix, pull out the maxx bass plugin, if you have it. The hiphoppers love that shit. They'll think you're a genius. :D
