Does anyone know of a mixer that has a firewire interface and a MIDI interface? Or alternatively a USB Audio i/f and MIDI i/f? I am trying to "de-clutter" and I thought there maybe some solution out there.

Thanks

Do you mean one with real motorized faders? They aren't cheap.

Most mixer also do not do midi, only audio. You can use a separate usb midi interface along with one with no problems (just a little 'clutter'.)

You'll want to look at the Presonus StudioOne, the Mackie Onyx or the Yamaha 01/02.

Be careful of the usb ones. A lot of them only send a single stereo pair to the computer.

My suggestion: Just get an audio interface and do all the mixing in the computer. Faders do not make you 'pro'.

Thanks, but motorised faders are not what I am after really...I only want a simple midi in and out i/f on the mixer using firewire if possible..the Onyx does firewire but no MIDI, and the Presonus 16.4.2 is an EXCELLENT bit of kit, but very expensive (well out here at least) USB1.1 is onyl a pair, but USB two mixers send all channels, usually with only a single return pair though :(

I appreciate your response though :)

Cheers

NO, not all usb2 mixers send separate channels. MANY send only a single stereo pair to the computer.

Fair warning. Be careful what you buy. Many get stuck with kit they can't use.

Um, yeah, that is not correct. USB1.0 interfaces, are pretty much limited to two tracks. Yes.

USB 2.0 allows for much more. It is not the determining factor, as to what a particular interface/mixer will send. You need to really look into the specs, of whatever mixer you are thinking about. Hype, and conveniently written descriptions, can be completely deceiving, unless you know what you are looking for.

With that, I find it interesting that you want a mixer to begin with. What makes you think that that is a good idea? Are you recording live broadcast stuff, with multiple mics, that need 'hands on' attention, while you are recording?

Actually, you would be best served here, by giving a description of what your needs are, and what it is you wish to accomplish. Also, what do you already use, as far as gear/comp/interface/mics/etc....

Oh, and honestly, you don't really need an interface with MIDI inputs. Depending on what you are wishing to do (which we don't know yet), you can run a MIDI device, via USB, and your DAW software will use it. Again, it just depends on what it is you are wanting to do here.

I need a mixer as I am a live performer using a PA ;)

I currently have a Presonus Firestudio Mobile, and a separate small format mixer which is USB. To this I then need to add the Roland UM-SX as I play all VSTi's using a controller piano. I also do the vocals. So I need at least three returns from the laptop on stage to the mixer - backing tracks (using VSTis - solo keys again using VSTi's and then vocals - sometimes with effect, but again using vst effects.

I was looking to drop it one device. I would LOVE a Presonus 16.4.2 but I cannot afford one!

Oh and afaik USB1.1 has nowhere near the bandwidth to accommodate more than a single stereo in even using proprietary drivers and not just the "class compliant" ones...

But I do agree that some USB2 is exactly the same and some "hype" really gilds the lily, so to speak. However with the research I have done so far most of the USB 2.0 devices can run multiple sends (ie every channel) back into the DAW, some have more than one return, but most (budget) are a single return only.

Thanks for helping out...it is appreciated :)
