mixer vs. pre's?

The Behringers aren't much cop, no. Yamaha MGs are the best of the super-cheaps. But I still reckon my recommendations are the best. :)

noisedude, do you have aim or anything like that?
i figure it would be easier to talk back and forth using some sort of instant messenger.

Nick,

i was looking into the joemeek 3Q myself, but i read an old post by someone here pretty much stripin it down (all logical and making sense) and resuming and concluding that, past eq and comp, u end up with a 15 dollar pre.. :/

how would u rate the M series pres?
(preferebly against something i might know of...)

tanx!

tyler.
i agree 100 per cent with noisedudes soundcraft/delta combo.
great pick imho.
if you want that good one pre i would also check out the rane ms1b.
maybe not an ultra high end pre but frankly the average person buying your songs on cd wont be able to tell. its used by lots of pro people for a reason. sound quality/value for money.
ranes are very tough to beat for the price/performance imho.
for monitors i would look seriously at yorkvilles.
a favorite of a lot of small studios. once again value for money.
for mics there are thousands. but i would seriously look at the cad range
of mics. as well as audio technica, and sennheiser.
beyer mics have always been my favorites. but pricey.
for recording software i always recommend powertracks that i use due to its rock solid performance giving 48 tracks at a cheap price. others i like are magix music studio ,and multitrackstudio.com. just try the demos.
for a pc - as always i recommend an amd 64 with 512 minimum ram and two 7200 rpm hard drives with 8 mb cache.
hope this helps.

manning,
i already have plenty of mics. thank you very much for all the other information though.

That was DJL ... he has a PMI vendetta so I shouldn't worry about it. It's basically the same pre in the ThreeQ, the Toft stuff and the Drawmer 1969 Mercenary Edition ... so there's no problem with that.

The M series ... I haven't tried enough to know how to compare it but they're definitely a good step above the budget mixers including the Mackie VLZ IMVHO.

You'll get more variety of answers on here ... I am only one man and one set of opinions!! :D

damn nick,

now u got me back to consider the threeq...jesus..i gotta stop talking to you man :D

how would u rate it against the dmp3 for instance? a step up?
- pre wise only....

i figure i can tweak the vocals within something ive never heard before with the 3Q (i never eq or compress anything with plugins)...hopefully ticker/warmer?

what do you think?

As far as the Rane preamp goes, its really a sleeper preamp. Much better than you might think. As to pro's using it though? Not a single one that I am aware of.

With the Drawmer/Toft/Joe meek preamps thing.... I haven't used the Joe Meek, but I certainly heard dramatic differences in the preamp of the Toft and the Drawmer.

As far as a little mixer goes.... One of the Soundcrafts would make a nice little starter mixer. I still prefer the sound of the Allen Heath's though. Especially the newer ones (or the really old ones).

I haven't tried the M series either, and given that I have an Allen & Heath FOH board for pres, I probably won't, but apparently the new Mackie Onyx series mixers are supposed to be a huge step up in quality from the VLZ stuff - from what I've read. YMMV.

the Presonus Firepod(>$600) if less than half the price of the RME Fireface and come with 8 preamps and negates the need for a mixer. You would then use the money you saved to buy a sweet preamp/mics/whatever.....

Diogo - I don't know because my ThreeQs aren't here yet ... apparently they've sold out in this country ... but should be above the DMP-3 from the respectable reviews that have been written on them.

Nick,

as soon as u get your hands on yours do let me know how they work out...i think its really a cool solution, especially considering i can bypass (i think) the pre and use the eq and comp to run anther pre through it.

a tad better than the dmp3 is good enough for me, im really happy with what i hear on the dmp3!

tanx Nick, do let me know, and hope you like yours!
