I am building a modest PC based home studio as a hobby (at least at this point). It is primarily a digital studio and I'll only be recording myself (no band). I'lll have quite a few synths and some guitar. Most likely limited or no vocals, though I would mike some acoustic guitar work. My question is regarding mixers. I know that as time evolves, the gear head side of me will want more, more more.. But to start with, does anyone have opinions regarding using something like an Alesis Studio 32 (or 2 of them) or maybe even a Mackie 32x8? Or something else. Like most, I'm on a budget, so what would be the most bang for the buck (would consider used) for $1,500 or less. Thanks.

At that budget I would stick with Mackie or Soundcraft. I've never been too impressed with those Alesis mixers but some folks like them. They just feel to cheap for my taste.

Take a look at the TASCAM E-bay listings. They are a good buy right now and they're pretty decent mixers. Better than Alesis and I dare say the larger ones are on par with the Mackies.

After reading your topic I have a few sugestions for u on your search for the best mixer. I use the Behringer MX9000 Eurodesk 8-bus Mixing console and it has satisfied all my recording needs and I have lots of other options with this board(it comes with 24 channel full meter bridge) and it sells for around $1300 my other sugestion is to spend a little more money and go with a Carvin Sl24 24-channel 8-bus console it has alot of featurs and it is laid out real well but it sells for around 2k I hope these sugestions help

.. or a Soundtracs Topaz 24-8, that's what i am gonna buy in these days and i would recommend it...

U can find it for around 1000/1300 $ with meterbridge and it is a very fine board...
