Mixer/Recording Question

I have a little 2 channel tascam hard disc recorder that my band uses to record practices with. It only has 1/4 inputs so I am going from the mixer to the tascam directly into 1 track for all instruments. The problem I am having is because I have to plug in all the mics to the mixer... the added mics are coming out of the PA causing feedback and distortion. Obviously the only sound I want to come out of the mixer to the PA is the vocals... is there any way to avoid this problem without having to use another mixer??

What type of mixer do you have? Depending on it's capabilities, what you want to do are bus all your recording mics to different outputs that go to the Tascam, seperate from the vocal mics that go to the PA.
However, any sound that comes out of the PA may still be picked up by your recording mics and get into the recording. Of course, maybe you want that if that's the only way to capture the vocals.

Other options involve moving away from the PA and going to in-ears or headphones when recording. Or just getting a couple of XLR->1/4" adapters and doing a stereo recording of the room. (or getting a cheap 2 channel pre-amp).

But again, depending on your mixer, you should be able to make it happen.

I believe the mixer is a Mackie 1202-VLZ Pro... its the mixer provided in the rehearsal room we rent.

So the noob question remains: How do I send channel 1 to bus 1 and channel 2 to bus 2?

And I am not worried about the other mics picking up the PA sounds... this is mainly to set the proper levels and get a rough recording of our practice.

That mixer has 2 stereo buses and, therefore, 2 stereo outputs.

You select either the main output (bus 1+2) or the alternate output (bus 3+4) with the mute switch at the bottom of the channel path right above the solo and gain controls. They are labeled '1 mute alt 3/4', '2 mute alt 3/4' and so on.

Send the mic you want to segregate from the others into channel one, push the '1 mute alt 3/4' button and set the pan control all the way to the left. Then around the back of the mixer you will find a 1/4" output labeled 'Alt Output L/3'. Plug a regular guitar chord in there, then into the Tascam recorder.
