This is a stupid question, I'll be the first to say it. But I've never gigged, so is a mixer for a PA system the same as a mixer in a studio? :o

Don't hate me...specially you Ed.

You can use live mixers in the studio and studio mixers live. Over at gearslutz a guy snapped a pic of the red hot chilli peppers using a couple of 500 series racks filled with tonelux modules as their live rig. If it passes sound it'll work.

Well, there's nothing that prevents you from using one for the other, and many mixers are in the "general purpose" catagory, having provisions for both. The biggest difference, aside from price, is usually the number of busses. Live boards don't need all those assignable busses.

This I've got to see. Using it as their live rig? Or with their live rig? There is a big difference. Also, I have worked with their engineer several times. He never mentioned anything like that.

As far as the differences, they are both in the build and in the layout. Buss wise though, it is hard to say whether more is needed live or in the studio. If you are working with the Rolling Stones and need as many as 80 mixes, bussing would be pretty important (aux bussing). The new Midas Heritage 4000 has 40+ busses between auxes and traditional analog groups.

The board in my studio is an old Yamaha PM-2000 which was built as a live console... but its "Class A/discrete" and sounds absolutely huge... cost me about $4,000 USD when all was said and done... but it sounds about as good as any $125,000 USD API desk I've worked on so I would say it was a hell of a good deal. As always, YMMV.
