Mixer or interface?

Well im looking to do some recordings of my band and some friend bands but im not sure if i should buy a mixer or interface i already have mics and recording software but im not sure which would be better
I have about 300$ to spend and i would need 8 channels and phantom power

Get both, a firewire mixer. I've got the Phonic Helix. The audio signals are tapped right after the trim knobs to go to the converters and on to the computer. The rest is just like a small format mixer.
 
I would buy an older mackie vlz pro (like a 1602 or 1604) with the 300 and save for an 8 channel interface.

It good to have a mixer for monitoring as well as mixing.

You can always use a mixer. Hell, you could still record to a VCR from the mixer main buss. A VCR is dirt cheap these days.
 
then that would be the one i would go with. i am gonna get one.....
