I don't know who read my other thread, but I've decided against getting a mixer for live and studio, so I'm gonna get a decent pre-amp or two for vocals/guitar/pretty much everything else, but I wanna record drums with 6 mics!

What I need is a little mixer that will record 6 XLR inputs, and output them to 6 channels on my soundcard (Delta 1010LT) so I can mix then separately, as cheaply as possible... Can you guys suggest anything? I'm having a hard time searching...

...and I'm sure you want the highest possible quality for the lowest possible cost, right?

Welcome to the club.

Unless you're willing to lay out more than I assume you're planning on OR settle for something that duplicates part of what you already own OR dial back your expectations you're in the same boat as all the rest of us here --- eyes bigger than wallet, as a wise waiter in the Chinese restaurant was heard to say.

The Rolls RM81 can be picked up on ebay relatively cheap, I've seen it go for less than $100.00. It has 8 inputs (XLR) 2 outputs or 8 outputs (Hi-Z) that you can select by moving internal jumpers. It's a basic 1U rack mixer. I copied the following specs from an ebay listing:

Input Impedance: Mic: XLR: 600 W balanced 1/4": 50K W unbalanced
Bus Input: 10K W unbalanced
Max Input Level: Mic: -15 dBV balanced
Line: +22 dBV
Input Connectors: 8: XLR, 8: 1/4" (Line), 1: RCA (Bus input)
Outputs: 1/4" bal. TRS Main, RCA unbalanced Prefade out
Max Gain: Mic: 55 dB
Line: 26 dB
Tone Control: 20 dB Treble/Bass cut
Phantom Power: +12 VDC
Output Level: +17 dBV max
Output Impedance: 51 W
Phase Shift: <10 degrees, 20Hz to 20 kHz
Max S/N ratio: 106 dB
THD: <.003%
CMRR: >52 dB (Mic)
Size: 19" x 1.75" x 6"
(48.3 x 4.5 x 15 cm)
Weight: 7 lbs. (3 kg)

Peavey PV10. About $230. Excellent pres for the money. I've used its little brother (PV8) with good success with ribbons.

That said, I'd probably pay the extra $30 for the PV14. I know 10 pres is a little overkill, but if you're doing drums, having 8 matched pres would be a good thing. Either that or spend about $50 less and buy a pair of PV6s.

I was thinking about getting the PV14, but I heard that the pre-amps are really noisy, ie. near useless for recording?

And btw ssscientist, I'm not after the best sound for the lowest price, I'm getting the standalone pre-amps for good sound, I just want something that makes it POSSIBLE to put the drum mics into the soundcard. My hopes aren't too unrealistic...

OK.

Then I second dgatwood's Peavey PV10 or PV14 recommendation.

As he said, 'Excellent pres for the money.' He said he's used the little PV8 with success with ribbon mics which are known for quite low output level and therefore require the premp to be turned up higher than most other mics.

Your assertion that the PV10 or PV14 'pre-amps are really noisy, ie. near useless for recording?' is incorrect.

Until you've used one yourself, don't base your opinions on rumor or hearsay.
