mixdown from 32bit float to 24bit

Hello,

In the "save as" dialogue box I've clicked the "options" button and chosen "type 1, 24bit". I'm doing this because my mastering software is not playing my files saved as 32bit float. I've emailed their tech support for an explanation since their software uses 32bit float internally just as CE.

I don't want to dither until after mastering. Please tell me that there is no need to dither when selecting "type 1 24bit" otherwise my mastering software may prove to be useless for anything except 16bit 44,100.

Thanks,
Rusty K

As I see it, 24bit integer has a high enough resolution for it not to require dithering.
Plus, I've seen it written many times that you should never dither on top of dither - it should be a final act before making it to a lower resolution product.
If my reasoning is correct, you should never apply dithering at mixdown for a pre-master.
I'm only going on what I've read, but it seems logical to me. I'm not expert on the fine points of dither and/or noise-shaping, not even sure what all the available options achieve!

There are several 32bit types you can save to, including an integer option.
32bit (type1 - 32bit) is actually CEP/Auditions internal format, so maybe that's the trouble. 32bit Type1 24bit is actually stored in 32bit floats
You could also try saving as a RAW if your other application can "Open as" from it.

Jim Y,

I think you are right. When choosing my "options" in the "save as" dialogue box, one widow popped up titled "range from 20 to 32 bit". I'll post again when I have more info.

Thanks
Rusty K
