How are you supposed to check your mixes with the mixes of other professional recordings if they've been mastered? I mean, I check for EQ differences and of course placement of the sound in the stereo environment, but how can you really compare the two?

Also, what's a good way to do this in the home studio without having to unplug speakers from your system and into your stereo...by then I usually forgot exactly what I was listening for because of the lag time.

What exactly changes from mix to master beside making it apparently louder and adjusting some EQ?

You can't. Just use the CD's as a guide. Mastering shouldn't be a drastic change but lately it seems like it is.

Huh? Why can't you play CD's on your recording system?

well...that's what I'm wondering...I've got a Roland VS 880EX, and I've just recently gotten a burner (which it didn't have before). I could probably play through there. Never tried.
