True,

Are you still planning to post the details of the judge's notes for us to see and learn more about how our mixes were viewed?

Thanks.
Hey Fish! You are welkom...Yes, we will all be posting. I had hoped it would be at the same time, but it won't. I will start putting togather my notes so I can post as soon as possible.

True :)

EDIT:I have just made a thread here called....Rami's mix-off discussion thread.

Edit: Rami has already posted a thread at his place for the Winners/runner-ups to post how they mixed.

The Judges: True-Eurt and Ido1957

And of course RAMI.

Well to begin with each and every mix that was presented to us Judges was a pleasure to listen to and the talent that was displayed in all these mixes was nothing short of amazing.

The judging process was a very time consuming process, as you all know...but the listening that was required to analyze each and every mix in the detail that was required was always going to be a time consuming task.

All 16 of the mixes on a whole were so similar in so many aspects that the task of elimination was extremely complex process that required multiple listens to really delve into the make up of each individuals idea of what they were conveying in their mixing of RAMI's tune.

The process I used in my listening of all the individual mixes was as follows:

1. I played all the mixes one by one through my studio monitors and just listened for any particular aspects that stood out as being unique from all the other mixes.

2. The second listen was to play all the mixes through and analyze the guitars:

(a). The panning and how they were positioned in the stereo field.
(b). The volume of each guitar track.
(c). Was each guitar track clearly audible?
(d). The tonal balance across all the guitar tracks as a whole.
(e). The effects used (if any) and if the use of them enhanced or detracted from the instrument.
(f). The EQing and the frequencies associated with the guitars.
(g). The general drive the guitars provided to the song as a whole.

3. The third listen was to listen to and analyze the drums and the bass:

(a). The positioning of each of the drums in the stereo frame.
(b). The effects (once again if any) such as reverb, compression and how it was applied to enhance or did it detract from the instument.
(c). The EQ application to all the toms, snare, high hats, cymbals, bongo's and the kick drum.
(d). Was there excess sibilance or harshness and a need for de-essing on the cymbals and high hats?
(e). The clarity and volume of the bass guitar.
(f). The seperation in frequencies between the kick drum and the bass guitar. Could each instrument be heard independently because of the occupation of similar frequencies between the bass guitar and kick drum?
(g). The overall volume of the drums in the mix and were they detracting from other instruments.

4. The fourth listen was for the main vocals and the back up vocals:

(a). The effects (if any, reverb etc) applied and how it enhanced or detracted from the delivery.
(b). The position of the main vocals as to front and back in the stereo field by the use of volume on the main and back up vocals.
(c). The relation between the main vocal and the back up vocals in regards to their own position in the mix determined by: panning, volume, reverb, compression etc. (Looking for no impingement of the main vocals by the back up vocals).
(d). The clarity achieved by using the above applications to hear each vocal track distinctly from the other.
(e). The smoothness of the delivery in the context of the overall mix. (Controlled mainly by the initial tracking).

5. The fifth listen was conducted on my home stereo system, which allowed all the mixes to be heard in a different acoustically treated environment. The reason being for this was that there appeared to be a general consensus across all the mixes to be bass guitar prominent. I wanted to apply the application of lstening in a different setting to see how all the mixes faired.

The results were interesting with the mixes bearing subtle differences that weren't picked up too clearly in the previous listens, eg: The bass guitar became slightly more prominent in some mixes while the vocals and back up vocals on some mixes sounded to be causing a slight conflict with each other in others.

6. I returned to the studio and played all the mixes back to back over a period of a few days and slowly but surely started the elimination process by bringing the number of mixes down with each successive listen.

After what would have been approxiamately one hundred and twenty listens to RAMI's mix off tune I had a list of winners and runner-ups.
My first list of choices was the list I stayed with right through the elimination process that led to the winners and runner-ups that we finally decided on.

I can't stress enough to all you guys how tough it was to eliminate mixes to end up with the final six. Throughout the whole process of judging I conducted myself in a manner of applying what knowledge I have acquired in Home Recording and Mixing from trial and error, learning from you guys in this forum, reading and first hand experience.

I am by no means a proffessional and at the end of the day after I had applied all aspects of my knowledge in judging in this mix off, in the end it came down to what mixes appealed to me personally and how I would have approached the mixing of this great tune.

You are all champions in my book and you should all be so proud of yourselves because you are all so talented in this field of music.

Well Done each and everyone of you!!... :) :) :)

A special thanx to True for giving me the opportunity to be part of this and all the effort she has put into this to make it all possible!!

A special thanx to Gerry (Ido1957) for his time and efforts.

And a special thanx to you to RAMI for all your great tracking and efforts.

The RED Judge...

Ahhh, fineally it's over!!! Big thanks to RAMI, TRUE, the Judges, and the other mixers....

This is truly a great honor for me as it was the very first tune of someone elses I ever mixed!! To be nominated in every catagory, and to win one of them is a blessing, espically coming in as late as i did...

A year ago I wouldda' had probably 10-12 mixes of which wouldda' taken me hours and days to get to something I would have even considered entering... I think on this one I had 2...One the first day of mixing and another the second that I tweaked from the first after listening to it in my car. (I use my car w/ a stock POS stereo for reference, cause if it sounds good there it should sound okay elsewhere :))

After listening to all the mixes, I really learned alot...and that is the most important thing for me...I now hear what I would of done differently...The number one thing I would have changed it the amount of high end in my mix...It was alot brighter than it should have been...other than that, I really wasn't expecting to have gotten this far let alone win the most imagnitive...which for me is great...It tells me that I hear things in songs (little neuances) that I like to bring out, tweak, change and add....and that what I do adds to the tune rather than make it distracting....And being nominated in all three catagorys tells me that I'm not too far off frome being half way decent at this....Because I love doing this stuff, that really means alot to me...

Sorry for the rant, but I'm giving myself a pat on the back cause I am truly excited about this....!

Thanks!

Dude, you deserve it. I tried giving you some rep, but it didn't let me. So I'll say it here. I'm flattered that you are so excited about the results. Obviously, it's my tune and contest, etc...so I am into it. But I didn't think it would mean that much to anyone else. The time and effort and care that everyone put into their mixes...Along with the time and effort and care the judges took to do their jobs is actually very touching, if I can allow myself to get a little corny...So...Thanx alot, you made my day...All of you!!!

Rami has already posted a thread at his place for the Winners/runner-ups to post how they mixed....so I moved my post from the other thread I started here, with some edits of course.

At first I thought the judging would pretty much be based on personal taste, but I have my doubts now, because we each have a different genre of music we each play more than others and we also used different methods of listening, yet still, the overall choices of were right on mark togather....with the exception of a few mixes. Even if we had chosen mixes for different category or placement...the point is ....we were choosing the same mixes so often, it was uncanny...why? What exactly was it that these judges were all three hearing? This will be a very informative and interesting thread!!!

I am sad all could not win a prize, but I am very happy at the learning that has come from this, and is still to come!!

I will admit, that in several instances, I almost fipped a coin!!
I didn't though. I just kept listening and trying to hear every aspect of the song. Even to the emotion, that the mixing process gave or took away.

Please feel free to ask me any questions on the method I used, or if you don't think my way was good or a fair way for some reason, then say so. We will discuss. I have never judged a contest before and this was quite the learning experience. I now have a lot more insight of guidelines, rules, criteria and the such, that make it a better contest. I will be open and honest with you guys. I also will be posting some of the changes of guidelines that may have occurred during the judging process, because it was fairer or more in-depth.

I will share some of the strange methods, I used to judge these mixes!!

Feel free to comment on them when I do, as to whether you think they are a valid method of listening.

Please don't think for a second, that it changed whom was chosen. It may have changed how they were chosen and at one point, gave others a chance to win also. Forgive me for any boo-boo's made. It would be of my blunder, not the other judges. I do not know if judge #2-The red judge .... is going to remain anonymous or not, but that is there choice and I will respect that choice. They are qualified to judge this contest though. Much more that I. So is Gerry-judge #1-The blue judge. I can't thank them enough for helping in this. I also breathed much smoother, once I saw my selections matched theirs...I didn't feel quite so dumb!! And I was re-assured that you guys would get a fair judging. Oh, I am judge #3-The purple judge!!!

EDIT: Gorty is the Red judge... as you now know!! :D

Once again...I love you guys!!!

Yes, there were three judges. Ido...Gorty....and I. There was to be a 4th judge, but because of a mix-up (pardon the pun)...in pm'ing, it did not pan out.(pardon the pun again :D) ...by the time we got it sorted, he felt it was too far into the listening process, and he would not be able to listen properly. Kudos to him for the wisdom.

I believe the guys I asked were good choices, and that the participants would respect their opinions.(you surely had a bit of a struggle with the thought of me! :D ) I also felt that choosing judges, whom participated in the mp3 clinic on a regular basis was mandatory. I also believe the choices have integrity.

By the way Rami....just wanted to share with you...I had a dream with you in it last night. Yes...you were naked in it!!! Oooooo laaaa laaa baby!! I must dream good dreams, cause you were sporting everything to be proud of!!!  :D :D :D

Hey Rami, long time and that.
Hope ya are well.
Anyways, I was wondering if you still had the tracks up to mix, I couldnt see any drop down menu in the links page.

Eck

No, I took everything down. I don't have the tracks seperate any more, and from what I understand, neither does anyone else. Sorry man.

Thats cool.
Was just wanting to get some practice in as I dont have any tracks at the moment, well any tracks im not sick to death of hearing that is!

You dont know any websites that put up seperate tracks of songs for folk to mix? Im sure there must be something like that somewhere, but not sure what to type into google.

Hey guys,

don't forget to check back to RAMI's forum every now and then. Not that there's anything new right now, but our judges get the impression that nobody's interested anymore. And I know I would like to read True's notes.

As of now, I haven't managed to put the notes on how I approached my own mix, but I will try to do it in the next few days and post them over at RAMI's and maybe here, too.
