______
Mix this acoustic blues tune.

Here are the tracks. They're 320 kbps mp3s.

rhythm gtr
bass
my lead gtr
Drumset w/brushes
drumset w/sticks
vocal
my gtr fills
anfontan's elec gtr
anfontan's dobro
dogman's avant garde gtr
my avant garde gtr part

The tracks are all time aligned for ease of use but not meant to play ALL at once. For longer versions, just copy and paste segments where you want them to extend the arrangement.

My original mix used just the first seven tracks, and I did alternate shorter versions with the additional tracks. Lots of other possibilities.

Look forward to listening.

OK,
1st attempt at mixing the work of another. Perhaps the pan shift of the acoustic rhythm gtr is too abrupt. I loved Dogman & Anfotan's solos as well as Tim's AG but opted for an older style & left out the modern.
I felt very strange doing thsi, kind of like raiding the vault without permission but nevertheless here's a straight barrel attempt.
It was all very easy in terms of source material - excellent tracking and setting up by Timothy.
I'd forgotten the title so it's Tim's Blues 2 (for 2nd mix) in soundclick.

Thanks for the change to play with it - I've not added to he canon of blues mixing but I think I learnt a thing or three from the experience.

Good to hear the mixes. Lots of variety in the approaches. Listening on headphones on my laptop, and will listen later on speakers…

I should mention a timing thing in the original. The first track laid down was the rhythm gtr. It was done with just two choruses, and not to a click so the two choruses were a little different rhythmically. Everything was expanded from that. In the tracks here all the choruses that have the rhythm gtr doing the 4-to-a-bar strum are the original first chorus, and the chorus starting at 1:33 is the other. So if you move parts around watch out for that. Also, in my mix I pitch shifted Dogman's solo 6 semitones lower but it's not shifted in the track here, so if you want the two avant garde parts to harmonize you'll have to shift his.

amra – good bass gtr clarity, opening of the mix is big sounding and distinct. Ah, you used both drum parts together. I like the lead gtr and dobro together at 1:33. Panning sounds natural.

nessbass – I like the room sound and wide panning. Makes the brushes sound great. Different approach with the loud mix and lead gtr saturation and I like the in-your-face sound. Cool effect on the dobro.

rayc – Nice to have the bass gtr prominent. I like the staggered start, and the panning of the gtr backing licks moved over to the right. Effective panning of the two lead parts at 1:33.

TravisinFlorida – Hey, the first mix to move parts around! Good room sound. I like the dobro at the opening and the thinning of the lead gtr to match it. Good balance between Anfontan’s lead and dobro at 1:03.

Heya all!

Haven't been here for ages and I decided to pay a visit and found this. I just had to give this one a shot :p. Also this was a excellent test for the Reaper sequencer (I use Cubase usually). Wanted to give the Reaper a test run. More so I decided to try to mix this with only free plugins plus Reaper's own stuff :)

My attemp.

I tried to make the imo bit too clean tracks to have some dirt. Also I didn't want to mess around with the EQs too much to keep the "raw" sound intact. I mixed this mostly with using different verbs and some carefully selected comp plugs. There is really no mastering there - I know it could use a bit sweetening EQ there, but thats totally another story :).

heres my attempt on it. im not too familiar with mixing this genre and i may have mad the drums a little too present. lemme know what you think.

i mixed it entirely on headphones because the studio computer doesnt currently have internet access.

my attempt

tracks were recorded very well btw

Got 'em all.

Gonna be out until Mon but will be listening to the mixes in the car until I'm back in the studio. Actually, it's got OK sound quality... for a car.

Wish I had time right now to do a mix.
I will get round to mixing this at some point hopefully.

wow mine sucks compared to everyone elses.. maybe i shoulda spent more time on it ... or read more :o

well, here's mine. spent about an hour on it. this was a lot of fun to play with, and i was hoping you'd do this with this tune tim. you must've been reading my mind. :D

cheers,
wade

I'm sorry,
I tweaked my mix a bit as I REALLY like the rhythm track so bass, drums & acoustic git are a little bigger. I also tidied up the panning in a spot of two.
The G Fish did an ace job on the vox & I hope he doesn't mind them mixed in amongst the instruments - sounds right to me but a) I'm using h/phones as I'm upstairs & b) I'm a bass player so I'm no judge.

I must add that it was really difficult leaving out the Dog & Avant Gtrs but, after several tries, I found I'd made too cluttered a mix particularly as I've used the bass, drums, Tim Lead, Tim fills, & Dobro each in stereo. I also flipped between drum kits at need.
Thanks for letting me peak under the skirts of someone else's business.
I really enjoyed listening to the other mixes - All have a major series of pluses - I'm glad music isn't offered for sale in quite so many mixes - I'd end up buy far to many of the same CD - I'm a music marketers dream.

I love all these different mixes that were done with the short bits that I submitted to this-they all sound terrific to me! Thanks for making this all possible Tim~

Hey again :)

I decided to give this one another shot with my "real" mixing stuff (as opposed to Reaper + freebies). So this time it is Cubase SX 3 and some commercial plugs (mainly some URS stuff and some Voxengo).

I was kinda surprised from the spaceness, clearness and dynamic difference it made. My mixing approach was the same - trying to keep the tracks quite raw and give them some dirt and character (some blues yeah! :p).

The "proper" version

Check out the space and dynamics in this one - it just keeps sounding better and better if you crank it up, no smashed dynamics here :). And again no mastering.

Kainz – Really well balanced mix and arrangement using the best aspects of each part. Making it dirtier made the elec, acoustic and dobro parts mesh well. What were the plugs used to give it the saturation?

mystasynasta – very clear bass part in this one. Nice balance and ambience. Busy arrangement yet everything’s clear.

Nick – I like the big room sound. Ballsy, bigger than life mix. Sounds a bit like a live recording in a big auditorium. How’d you make the bass growl like that?

mrface2112 – hey, this is a very creative out of the box approach. Good balance and another big room sound, which I like.

Heh, all the mixes make mine sound pretty plain. :o

Ray and Kainz - just saw that you guys did new mixes, and look forward to those too.

Anfontan - Nice to hear the acoustic and elec together. I think everybody here did really well at getting them to mesh.
