Tim,

I grabbed the individual files that you posted and I put together another mix. I edited individual performances and attempted to make them fit together including my effort at harp and piano again without getting too deep into EQ'ing, panning, or dynamics.

What can I say? I love this tune!!!!

I can't thank you enough for beginning this thread and allowing the rest of us join in.

Up All Night April 7 Mix

Please note that I'm a beginner. Heh

Old mix (no rhythm guit):

austinm08 - I listened to the first mix you had up last night (no rhythm gtr). The new link isn't working though.

The first mix sounded very good... rich big tone from the bass & drums and you made the lead gtr sound fat without sounding artificial at the intro. I'm tired of that chunk/chunk/chunk/chunk rhythm gtr anyway. :D

Thanks.. yes.. I worked on a new mix today.. and I can't get it to upload.. come up with an error every time.. if I do get it to upload, that will be the correct link. I'll keep trying. I think you'll like it. Maybe..

EDIT: Alright it finally uploaded! After about 8 attempts.. so.. I'm sorry to bring back that chunk chunk chunky rhythm guitar in the new mix :p

Sounds good. But I think you had an unusually good balance in the first mix. In fact, keeping to the minimalist arrangement of that first mix, I think if you took out my lead gtr fills during the choruses where Anfontan is playing, it'd be quite excellent overall. Maybe add in a barely audible rhythm gtr (really just barely), but I do like it without it. The drums sound awfully good without the rhythm gtr competing. Can you tell me exactly what plugs you ran the bass and drums through?

That means a lot to me. I really have a low amount of knowledge in mixing, with not much experience.

But, anyway, I agree, I think maybe it sounds a little nicer without the rhythm guitar and drums both pushing against eachother.

Concerning the bass and drums.. I honestly don't think I did anything special with them. It was 1am when I did it, so I could be forgetting.. but I'm pretty sure I didn't use any plugs on 'em. Was there some verb on the drums already? If not, then I may have added some. I can't remember.

I did use some compression on the overall mix I think, at the end.. to bring it up a little.. but, I think that's all I did that would have changed the bass and drums.

Yeah, sounds like there's some well done compression and verb on the bass, drums and first chorus of the lead gtr, and EQ on the bass. Can't fault you for not saving the file of the previous mix because I often do the same thing as I progress with a mix. One can only save so many backups of a project without totally losing track of them, heh. If the particulars do somehow resurface, I'm interested.

I downloaded the bass and drum tracks again, and compared with mine, and they sound exactly the same. Checking EQ in Audition shows no EQ done on either. Must just be compression.

I think I probably did do some stuff with that lead guitar, though.

Yes, my fault for not saving separate mix files for each version.

Great tracking, though. I'm not really familiar with this bluesy stuff, but it was fun to experiment with :D

These are all sounding great. Its surprising how different we all mix. Im still in England at the minute but im gonna give this a go when i get back to Belfast next week. Of course i am doing some studio work while im here, i may just bring the files down to the Neve desk and tell the band to go fetch me some beers while i get down to some real work. Hmm...Tempting!

jmorris - I like the emphasis on the bass gtr during the vocal. The low end of the mix sounds really good with the compression.

OK. I'm waiting to hear it. But I'm also thinking that if we can link up during my visit to London this summer it'd be cool to mix this together in a studio there. I'll send you a PM. I wonder if Abbey Road Studios has discount rates for early morning hours.

I dont seem to be able to download these files, when i click on them they open up and i can play them. Im using a mac, Anyone any ideas? Im dying to mix something...

They're 320 kbps mp3s. Does your mixing software import mp3s?

Oh wait, you said you can play them but not download them? Man, dunno.

Im using cubase sx1 and it appears that i cant import mp3's, im nearly sure i have done it before though, maybe if i got them on a cd i could import from there, however when i click on the links the parts just play though quicktime online i dont get to download them...frustrating!

I had quicktime on my system for a short period. It messed up my ability to download mp3s because it streamed the files. Is there a way to access the temporary internet files it's streaming to and save them from there? Or perphaps turn off quicktime temporarily to download the files? Once you've got them it's easy to convert them to wav.

I downloaded the MP3s & converted them to wave with a ripper/converter before importing & playing with them.
You should be able to do something similar with a mac.

I thought I'd throw a mix into the ring. Kind of a cool little song. I don't work with blues very often, so it was a nice change. I decided to just use the brush drums track. I didn't listen much to the other drum track. I just like the way the brushes were working, so I just left it that. Muted a few guitar parts here and there.

Rich sounding mix Raw-Tracks. I like ambience on the vocal and the bass gtr clarity.
