Hey,

The first thing that stands out is way too much reverb applied on the vocal. Tone that down (quite a bit), see how it sounds, go on from there.

I'm not familiar with the original song, but arrangement-wise, I do think that experimentation with light percussion is warranted. You can always cut it out if it doesn't work!

Thanks. Is there a way to keep high reverb yet remove the wooliness of it? That must be what I'm hearing. But, our band likes a ton of reverb just an a stylistic effect so we'd like to keep it. Would sending the vocal reverb to a bus that has an EQ curve cutting the highs and lows/low mids be the way to do that? I'm using Valhalla so maybe it has that option I'll look.

I agree that considering some light percussion might enhance this a little.

I also agree that lowering the verb just a hair but letting it trail a little longer might be an improvement.

And the vocal might need a little EQing to bring the mid/mid-hi frequencies out a bit.

Overall - sounds pretty good.

Put a EQ Plugin before the Reverb - cut between 180 hz and 400 hz out - you can leave it high in the mix.

Here is an updated mix. Is the vocal reverb any better? I cut out some lows and mid lows in the vocal-reverb vst and then used a slightly higher predelay. I also raised the mix's gain by 2B and thickened up the acoustic guitar a hair.

I'd try this:

On the instrument side I'd be looking to cut between 200-600hz and boost from around 5K up then check levels.

Drop the vocal level.

For the vocal reverb I'd put the reverb on an aux track with an eq before it cutting everything below 400hz and everything over 4kish (use your own judgment on this) and then put a compressor (doing light work) after the reverb.

I think I would look at re-tracking this for better results and to tighten it up a bit (the guitars a bit strummy and the vocals a bit pitchy).

I listened to your latest mix.

Sonically, I think it sounds good. I don't mind the reverb amount, or its timbre. I like the panning to. I wonder if the organ sound is contributing a bit to the low frequency mud? I assume you have already tried some low end roll off, and other low mid tweaking?

I agree with HumanPlanet that it needs retracking due to the pitchy vocals. The guitar sounds slightly out of tune to me, as well.

Overall enjoyed the tune.
