I'm trying to make my mixes sound louder. Arn't we all?

It sounds good but I'm trying different techniques for certian songs ya know.

I have a Sony DAT machine thats 16bits/44k.

Would i achieve better sound if i just go from SPDIF out to the dat SPDIF in. And rec it there, instead of bouncing it to 16bits inside protools? I can also monitering the loudness on the dat also.

Would it be worth trying?

I don't think it will make much difference, the only difference might be the summing bus of the digi 001might sound different than the direct digital to the sony dat. Some people don't like how the digi 001 mix bus. As for making it louder, I would get the Waves L1, it is a limiter and would make your mix louder. Also try some comrpression and limiting.

conversions/bouncing to stereo are done mathmatically in pro tools as like some other programs, some people don't like this and they go direct to say, a nice neve board.....or some good analog pre's and not worry about the D/A conversion loss. If I had a good board I would probley do this too. And yes.....the waves plugs have a good maximizer.....also try out Maxim.

Well i tried it. One thing i notice, I can go about .5db louder i think, but then i started noticing it doesn't do digital clips. If i do a D/A conversion in protools to the DAT i can adjust the volume and such. But i can't in digital SPDIF.

Worth a shot.

Go Spidif out of the digi 001 and spidif in into the dat. Then play the dat back digitally through spdif into the digi 001. Make a new session called mastering of something like that record the dat, then apply some limiting/compression to make it louder. Try to avoid going DA, it will degrade your sound.

Thats what i had plan to do.

try to do it both ways.......A/B them and see if the difference was really worth while. I would like to know if you did.

digi/analog

i think whether you went to dat or bounced it, would not matter so long as the sample rate and bit resolution are the same. digitally transfered to the dat that is. MAXIM, L1 and L2 ULTRAMAXIMIZER are exellent plug-ins and you can get the mix pretty hot. but nothing can can simulate a nice piece of analog gear. hitting tape at +6 or +9, or driving some fat tubes is a compression that sounds so natural that it still cannot be simulated with numbers. but should you need a hotter mix than some plug ins can produce send it to a mastering house for that final 3-6dbu of level.
