Sjoko2 thinks the 528 sounds better than the 528E? ... then get this guy over here to shed some knowledge. I might start an extra post for that but maybe you can answer this here:

If I got the 528, I would most certainly use an RNC instead of the comp that comes with the unit (I like the way you can use each of the 528 processors independently). Are the preamps on the two 528/528E the same?

so the sytek...

is generally getting dissed? i had heard great things about them, but here folks seem lukewarm, or is it just because we're also looking for something here with a compressor in the same unit?

more sytek comments if anyone has them -- i was thinking of getting one,

thanks!

You are correct. This thread concerns "the all-in-one" unit. Although I did report some dismay over not being able to find a working telephone number, website, or verifyable location for the company. Which leaves me somewhat suspicious. Are they a real company, or just some talented engineer working out of his garage in Palatine, IL, who prefers reclusivenes. Either way, I don't like the customer/technical support prospects.

But they really are supposed to be outstanding pres, so don't let that deter you.

MCR, I have actually heard a few people mention that they really like the compressor section of the Symetrix. That's not to say there's anything wrong with having an RNC, because it's a good thing to have around.

You should really do another search on rec.audio.pro and look in to the audio upgrades for the 528 (www.audioupgrades.com). It really is supposed to be a serious step up from the original preamp that comes with the 528. One of the guys at rec.audio.pro likened it to the kind of detail he hears from Great Rivers and/or Grace Designs. Check that out. That setup should give you about the best all-in-one package one could get for under $1000.

Ha Ha!:D

Chess, that stuff you quoted from Michael Schoenfeld kills me! He is one of my oldest dearest friends and the info he reports is basically watered down info I've related to him. Why don't you ask me instead, that way you'll get the unwatered-down version:) Such a small world.

The Digitech VTP-1 and the dbx 586 are cousins as far as design is concerned, both were designed by IVL. However, the 586 was completely re-designed by dbx engineers before being produced, and the VTP-1 was not. The output section on the 586 was completely re-vamped and the two sound very different from each other.

The lack of responses concerning the 586 on a HOMErecording bbs actually makes total sense to me, and Chessrock pushing the Mindprint over the 586 on a HOMErecording bbs makes sense to me as well. If you peruse the negative responses to the 586 you will discover that a lot of the most negative responses were from peple who had never even used one. After doing this job for a while I'm able to tell if people have used a particular piece of gear based on what they say (or don't say) about it. You should listen for yourself.

The amount of dbx gear being sold on e-bay is a specious argument at best. dbx has been in business for 30 years, we have so much gear out there that it would be much weirder if only small amounts were being sold on e-bay. The sheer volume of Silver Series units that were produced easily accounts for the number of units being sold and re-sold on e-bay. The Silver Series probably outsold ALL stand-alone pre-amps from ALL other manufacturers COMBINED.

hey guys,

I thought we had quickly eliminated the dbx series, but if not,
meshugah uses one and his last two posts in the clinic were done with the 586 I believe.

Seriously though. at the price of the 586, there are ten other choices I would pick before that unit.

Look out Tommy, we're going to have to make you an honorary Hyatt before long. :) :) :)

No way man, I'm not even close to qualifying. Check out the number of posts I have, compared to the number of posts Alan has. I've been here longer and I have like, 200 something. Alan has like a thousand.

200 some-odd posts, all meat. :D
