Miking Techniques For A Jsx 2X12

I just picked up a JSX 2X12 the other day , and holy S!*t i am blown away by its tone and aggression!! I ve been recording for years but mainly acoustic material and so forth so its a little different having to mic up to these monstrosities!! I can get a pretty good clean tone out of it without ease , this amp was built for that , but when it comes to some crunch or distortion , Im not experienced enough to know exactly what to do.

It sounds good and clean going through my monitors (im also using a MINDPRINT ENVOICE MK II tube pre- amp) but I think I just double guess myself , since like I said I am not too experienced when it comes to recording / mixing heavy electric.

So I was wondering what some good techniques are , I have plenty of mics (gear list at the bottom) , I just dont want to be wasting the quality tone this amp is giving. So all input will be well recieved.

Just stick a '57 in front of the speaker. It's fizzy in the middle and dark on the edges so just pick the area in between those two extremes that you like the best. Pull it back a little for a slightly brighter sound with less oomph. Stick it right up on the grille for maximum "balls".

Lots of other techniques can sound great too. That's just my 2 cents.

The 4033's would be OK or any of the dynamic mics you have would be worth a shot. As stated, closer to the center of the speaker =more strident, darker as you go to the edge. You just have to play with it to find your sweet spot. We could talk about the virtues of all the mics but it comes down to how the amp actually sounds to you. If it sounds the way you like it while you're playing it, you should be able to capture it.

This is a great starting point. I would usually do something like this an put the 4033 back a fe feet and up a few feet to get a bit of the room and more of the sound your ear hears. Be careful of phasing.

Most JSXs I've heard are really bright and fizzy. I'd definitely mic it closer to the outside of the speaker. Trust your monitors though, not your ears hearing the amp. This is the number one reason why a lot of people hate how their recorded guitar/snare/kick/anything close miced sounds; they aren't hearing what the mic hears so you NEED to set it up with a mic on it and listen through a monitoring system. Try micing both speakers with different mics and techniques. Just think logically; if you hear it as too dark, closer to the center and back it off a bit. If it sounds really flat and one-dimensional, ya know, shallow, then back it off or add a second mic and pick some other element of the cabinet off. Micing the back (I assume it's open-back) will probably sound great.

Thats were I mic my JSX. I running JSX Head into a XXX 412 cab and Ive tried all the speakers and the sound is the same. Bottoms a little more bass to them (slant cab)
