yes could you tell me the best way to mike a drum set and what kind of mikes work best.

yes i havw a delta 1010 and a mackie 1202vlz would that be enough to mike a drum set thanks

Basic settings of drum mic is 2 overheads, 2 tom mikes, mike hihat, mike bassdrum and mike snare. I do not know the specifications of the delta and the mackie, so you are dependant to the inputs you have. If you have less inputs, you can leav a tom mike out, mike the snare and hi-hat with one, or leave an overhead out.

Use the search functions on this forum, there has b een lots of threads regarding drum micing.

Yea, two overhead mics (small diaphragm condensers like Octava MC012 or Marshall 603s). XY pattern or spread them out further.

Bass mic - AT 25 pro

Snare - Shure SM 57

I agree with chessrock on his micing. You could also use ECM 8000s as the overheads.

Just to be relevant...

I have a Delta 1010 and two(2) Mackie 1202's. I use the inserts in order to get 4 discrete inputs to the 1010 and use of the Mackie mic pre's. Since I have two of these, I can get use of 8 separate pre's. If you have no other mic. pre's, you could:

1. Use 4 mics. Two overheads (I use the ECM-8000's and they pick up a lot of the set) a kick drum mic (I use a Beta-52, but there are a lot of opinions ) and one for snare(sm-57). You'll get the hi-hat and toms fairly well with omni's like the 8000's.

2. Put a mic on everything, (you'll need some xlr-1/4" adaptors),
send the overheads and toms to the main outs, panned correctly and alt 3/4 the kick and snare.

I'm fairly new at this, but I've done this both ways. I'm sure others have ideas on this, but I noticed we have similar gear.

I use AKG C1000's for over heads and depending on what I have got around (Or what sounds best at the time) sm 57 or 58's for bass drum and snare/Hi-hat!

My last setup was (2) ECM8000 for overheads, (1) Beyer MC740 LD Condenser w/10db pad on kick (front head off), and SM57 on snare. I did have (3) SM57 mics set up for the toms..but the ECM picked up everything I needed. If the toms were to low the drummer would hit the toms harder (dynamics). I patched in a graphic eq on the kick and cut 240Hz-400Hz by 4/5db and boosted 2.5Khz-5Khz by 3db. Made a -2db cut in the snare hi-mid, and boosted +2db in the snare lower mid I didn't need to compress or gate and got a "kick you in the chest" drum sound.

The key was to get the balance I wanted in the overheads and brought in the kick and snare to add in the beef.
