I tried running my brother's bass through my board, and it sounded good, but his style is a rhythmic one on the bass. Therefore, he tends to smack the strings on the beats. I was getting really bad popping from going direct, but it did help to mic the amp itself. I got decent results, but am going for better. Has anyone tried both miking and putting the amp directly through the board? Is this a good technique? Thanks for the help.

If he's popping etc through the board direct it'll happen throug the amp. It's caused by the string hitting the pickup so try lowering the pickup, or raising the strings.

Well........ what program are U using to record??? cause if U just turn the gain down some, so when he does smack the string it doesn't peak, you could go in an compress the bass after with a compressor patch. And that would help level out that crazy bassists slapin tendency.......

but try what John said first....

and if U record both the miced amp and a direct at the same time, it can sound good, but it depends on a couple things: quality of mic, quality of preamps, the line signal from the amp, and the amps speaker quality. U should just try it, the sounds might not match up to well, no harm in tryin =)
