I'm very new to live sound I've just recently purchased a PA.

Quick Question

Would it be better to Mic an amp?
Or run it into the PA Via Extention speaker output?

I have tried running the amp into the PA and what I got was a guitar that overpowered and cut out the vocals whenever it was played.

I was wondering if Miking the amp instead of into PA would be better?

miking the amp is the way to go usually. for recording or playing out.

The speaker out on an amp usually has some power going along with it, and I'm not a P.A. expert, but it seems like that could do some kind of damage to your board. Go and get an SM57 and mic it on up, that'll do the trick...

Either mic it or use a LINE OUT - this doesn't have the amplified (as in many watts) sound coming out - in a good amp it'll have the amped sound but not the power & the line out's "line level" will be appropriate for the PA.
The extension speaker line is to DRIVE, with amplifed power, another/additional speaker.

Let me get this straight, you thought that it was a good idea to run 50 watts into your mixer? Speaker outputs should never be used for anything but speakers...ever! BTW, the line inputs on your mixer are expecting around 1 volt, you were sendig it upwards of 10 or 15 volts.

The only time you take a direct signal from a guitar amp is when there is a direct output on the guitar amp. Preferably a line out with a cabinet simulator.

Most people just mic it with a 57.

get an sm 57 and mic the amp. micing is ALWAYS better. you always get all the tone. i peronsally hate direct anything, unless it's vocals. whcih even then, i put effects up the ass to cover up the shit sound

How the hell are you getting vocals direct? Does your signer have a DI on the side of his neck?

haha. what i meant by that was singing into the mic, then it going straight to the mixer, compared to [how ive sene some eople do it] micing and amp that the mic is hooked up to.

yea i know that sounded pretty stupid

The speaker out on an amp is for connecting an external speaker to the amp, NOT for connecting the amp to another amp or PA. Be warned, it wont take doing such a thing, to blow at least whichever chanel on the PA you are plugging it into, I learned this the hard way many years ago. The line out or efx loop send will not harm a PA but NEVER use the speaker out. I agree with some others here, the best thing to do is mic the amp if you need to get it into the PA.
