Yo Metric-man:
Looks like you have a decent multitracker.
Different mics do different things. If you want a decent vocal mic, for instance, you have several choices. But, you should have a good mic pre.
I have pres on my 2816 but use a Grace 101 for vocals. It makes a difference.
I could tell you that I like my AKG3000. I'd rather have the AKG4000 but am waiting until the price drops a bit. I also have
a Shure KSM 32 that I also like for vocals. [I sing for fun not for money.] However, those folks I record who do sing for $$ all have an idea of what they would like to sound like. So, I may use one mic for a female and a different mic for a male.
You might peek into the mic forum and read a bit. But, wait until after the New Year before buying. Prices do tend to drop after the holidays. All the vendors are having sales right now--ha!--AND, they will have better sales after January 1.
Also play around with a little EQ and different reverbs and delays. Sometimes I take a 3 minute vocal and do 8 to 28 mixes and pick the ones I like or those the talent likes.
Merry Christmas
