Mikeh (or anyone else) Aquarian Heads

Just wondering about specifics between the Studio X's and Performance II's. Are the Studio X's "too" muffled, as in "thuddy"? How do the Performance II's rate with say a Pinstripe? I'm going for a nice low, deep TONE not a nice low, deep thud. Thanks in advance...just want some more info before I shell out the cash...
 
Hello theletterq, If your looking for a nice low tone from your toms try this: place a new top head (forget about what kind) when tightening always go 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock to 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock and so on until the head is fairly tight. Next, take a stick and tap approx. one inch from the rim. Do this to all the lugs and at the same one inch spacing. When the pitch or tone is the same all around, your head is right. Next, loosen the bottom head a little at a time while tapping the top head until you get the sound your looking for. I hope I explained it alright. Later Dr.Den
 
Studio X vs. Performance II

A Studio X is a single ply head with a muffle ring. Provides a fairly bright attack, but limits the amount of ring. I think they provide a relatively controlled sound for single ply.

A Performance II is a two ply head which tends to emphasize a lower drum tone with less of the stick attack - Aquarian claims these heads are designed for "loose tuning". To my ear the Performance II provides a lower fundamental tone than Pinstripes - with less stick attack. For lack of a better way to say it - a "John Bonham sound"

I've never recorded with Performance II's but I'm thinking they may give you the sound you describe (but obviously I am guessing as to what you want).
