I'm using a Shure PG57 microphone (supposibly a instrument mic) placed directly infront of my amplifier, the mic is conected directly to my computer but for some reason the signal is close to nothing when playing guitar... Yet when tapping on the mic a reasonable level of output can be noticed

Is this mic deffected? Or am I missing something in the process?

I think you need a preamp.Tapping directly on a microphone is much louder than actual soundwaves.

What kind of soundcard and system do you have?

I'm using the stock soundcard of a Power Mac G5 computer.

I guess what I need is Phantom Power, not sure what to use though, the 12V? or the 48V? :D

You don't need phantom power!

Dude it's dynamic. You need a preamp. You can't just connect a dynamic microphone into your pc. You need a preamp to boost the signal.I suggest you get an interface with built in preamps. Make sure the preamp's EIN is atleast 50dB

He's correct....no phantom for that mic, just signal boost. Your soundcard might have 20db gain button built in, for mics...that might help some. You could also buy an inexpensive pre...like an Audio Buddy. Mine was $50, but they may be even cheaper now. It will allow for more bost. If you plan on doing more recording, look into some decent stuff that will allow you to grow.

how are you connecting the microphone?! The mic has an XLR connection and the G5 doesn't have an XLR input, so what is the signal path?! I hope it's not a XLR - 1/4" cable!

Thats how my friend trieed to do things. I personally think people really cant be cheap when it comes to recording you need a 200 dollar interface and thats the bottomline. Plus thats not that expensive.

How come nobody is suggesting the obvious option?

Turn the guitar amp up louder.... :D
