If you ask me, I would say the best drummer on earth is Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy. He's a genius, and really don't get enough credit for his work.

What makes a drummer genius anyway? In Mike's case I would say technique. In most jazz-drummers cases I would say feeling. In the case of, for example, Toto's drummer, I would say tightness (is that Englisch), on the beat.

What do you think?

You've got to be joking!

Portnoy is the WORST of the Progmetal drummers.

Mark Zonder from Fates Warning will eat him for breakfast.
Portnoy is just more popular, and I've found that his drum sound sucks....on top of that, their only GOOD Songwriter was Kevin Moore and He jumped ship right after Images and Words....and he wound up working with Fates Warning.

And for inventivenes, Bozzio will win every time.

Happy again!

I never thought that there'd be anyone that wouldn't elevate Mike to G-D status.

Don't get me wrong. I liked Mike a lot.

I've never heard much Dream Theater though.

Don't get me wrong.
I said Portnoy was genius because of his technique.
It might be all written in notes but it's still so great.
Anyway, Moore was able to write nice texts, but can't play keyboard at all.

Don't pay any attention to me.

Remember, I'm a jealous and petty man.

I just thought I'd be safe in this forum from hearing about 'him'.

;)

I see, you don't understand

I can't believe I just read that. Is someone trying to play a trick on me or something? Nonsense. Mike Portnoy is incredible.

As for drum sounds, the kit on "Falling Into Infinity" has quite possibly the beefiest drum kit sound I've heard, period. Especially the snare.

To say Mike Portnoy sucks seems a bit ... pretentious, or elitist. Even if there are 100 better drummers, he still does a good job. If you think he sucks or if you think he's by far the best drummer in the world, either way you need to get out more and hear some more drummers :). I can think of plenty of drummers at Mike's level or better, but if you want to hear the true meaning of the word "suck" check out some local rock clubs (wherever you live) or go to mp3.com. Mike Portnoy is definitely above a steaming pile of thousands of drummers.

If you'll notice, I never said he sucked...I said his drum sound sucks....and secondly, I said he 's the worst of the Progmetal Drummers.
To be quite honest, he's never really done anything that I found that "incredible", sure he's better than most of the every day rock drummers, but put up against the Best of the Prog drummers (or even the worst as far as I'm concerned)...you're scraping bottom.

I just never liked his style it always seems so mechanical and choppy....like a poorly programmed drum machine, and listen his playing on "Images and Words" ... Ugh. IMNSHO that's their best release as far as Songwriting goes, and Portnoy was lagging on that one!
Snare rolls? please. it sounds like my DM5 when it's only triggering half the strikes.
