Midi with SR16 and Akai DSP24

I don't know much about Midi. I have an Akai DSP24 MKII recorder and a Alesis SR16 drum machine. Both have midi in and out. Can I have either SR16 trigger the DSP24 to start or the DSP24 trigger the SR16 to start??? :confused:

Or do I need a keyboard to trigger both of them to start?
