MIDI Tracks into Audio Tracks (Cubasis)

If you have a midi track in cubase you either have to hook up a midi device to your computer or use a vst instrument. I'll leave the vst route for now.

Once you've connected your midi device to cubase and can get cubase to control it you then have to connect the analog output from your midi device to your interface and record it just as you would any other instrument. cubase is basically working as your midi sequencer.

Quick, Stupid Question

If I can mic any midi instrument via my speakers (since a mic is an audio signal) and it will record the track as an audio track that way (even though it was a midi instrument), what's the point of even using the midi cables you can connect top the back of your midi instrument, into your interface, and then the UBS connection to your computer? Why even worry about the direct midi cable, midi track recording? Won't the method I just said eliminate all the hassles with worrying about midi time sequencing, time clocks, and converting midi tracks later on to combine with your audio tracks to export as a single, wav file?

You can also by-pass the midi cable connections and just take a 1/4"jack, plug it into your keyboard that has a "midi out" jack with a 1/4" jack (usually at the back of the keyboard), plug it into the audio jack of your interface (to go to your computer), then it saves it as an audio file.

So why even use the midi cables to record a "midi track"? There MUST be a reason; it can'ty be that simple!

It sounds like you just want to play the keyboard and record the audio, in which case your method works fine. Just record directly from the 1/4" out and skip the mic.

Using MIDI tracks in cubase allows you to easily go back and edit the track and then play it back again. Also depending on what you are doing having the MIDI track synced to the tempo of the song make editing a breeze. Say you record a guitar track and you blow a chorus, you could then easily go copy another chorus from the same track and paste it into the spot because all of the beats in the recorded audio match the beats in cubase. I hope that made sense.
