i just ordered my second SBlive card for a midi setup, i found gigs of SF2 files that sound fairly good via FTP, i believe the creative card is needed to play these files or make them correctly, there's most likely other alternatives but at $33 i could handle the price... did i do right? thanks.

i have 2 old casio/yamaha key boards i'm using as triggers at the moment, i don't really care for them very much but they work, i very much enjoy using fruity loops sound efx with midi, yup, i'm new to midi but i've always had a deep passion for a smooth thick synth...

if you would, any advice on triggers (cheap) and sound cards for midi...

this will be a second card, added to my studio of 4 comps, the main system recorder uses an m-audio 410...

i also have an old yamaha XG sound card if thats relevent...

thanks for your time, links appreciated...

Why do you waste a PCi slot just for midi? You could get USB midi interfaces which works great. Try that.

thanks, whats your suggestions for one (usb) around the price of the blaster card i bought? and wouldn't pci be faster as with midi latency and that issue? not that it's bad now but somewhat noticable, just a thought...

i have an old yamaha pss-790 with an 8 track recorder on it, it's a mini keys board and the keys are easy to press compaired to the full size unweighted keyboard i have, i'm just transmiting on ch 1 at the moment and need to read up on the 16 ch config, any ideas or links are greatly appreciated, thanks again...

i know, do a google... heh

I guess that depends... Probably not.
Cheap? OK... It is that!
Save up your money and get 1 good soundcard with 1 good computer to use it with.
Almost all soundcards have full midi capability with 1 or 2 ports. If you need more ports (which you don't), get a midi router/interface.
It sounds like you need to read up some...
Here's just a few ...

Basic 1in 1out usb midi ports are pretty cheap but will seem poor value compared to an SB-live if all you want is Sound Font playback and 1 midi in. You can only have one SB-live in a pc, at least with creatives drivers. The program you need to make your own SF2's is Vienna. This may be on the cards driver CD but you should be able to d/load it from Creative.
Currently, Vienna will only work if it sees an SF capable soundcard and so far, Creatives Live and Audigy are the only ones I think.
There are VST and DXi software soundfont players for use with other cards such as V-sampler. This can also make soundfonts.

If all you really want is to make a special purpose pc just for SF playback from another sequencer or keyboard, then the SBLive is the cheapest thing that will do it. What I can't think of a solution for is what software to run that will allow the midi in to be automatically chaneled to the lives 16 midi parts. In other words, to act like a multi-timbral midi synth. There must be something?

USB midi is slightly worse for timing than PCI but not enough to make them unusable. Techno die-hards don't even think pci midi is tight enough and stick to the good old Atari ST and Cubase3.

heh, thanks...

i read the SB can record 48b if you tweak it, so iguess there not a total loss.

wouldn't it be a chanel config? i donno jack about midi...

running 3 systems now, the m-audio and drum mach, and a midi station so far, i was impressed with the quality of the SF2 files i found, i have vienna and a soft sampler, i just got board making drum and bass loops and like synth replacation qualtities, i can play the piano about half way also, again, thanks.

If your not using the "--------------" just to be artistic, I'm guessing you don't know how to use the "quote" feature... If you want to quote a whole post with the poster's name on it use the "quote" right next to the "edit" button on any post. Also make sure your vb code settings are turned to "on" in "user op". Then you can simply copy and paste into a dialogue box brought up mby the vb quote button and it comes out something like
