Hello all. I've been recording guitar tracks for some time through Cool Edit Pro. Recently, I've decided to step it up so I could record drums via Drumkit From Hell Superior. So, here's my problem:

I have recently purchased the following:

Cubase SE
Drumkit From Hell Superior

and

M-Audio Keystation 49e

Now, with all of this, I assumed I could properly record drums, with Cubase running the DFHS and it being controlled by my midi controller. Now, I can see that Cubase recognizes the M-Audio, because of the audio levels. Whenever I hit a key, the audio level moves, as though sounds were occuring. However, I CAN'T HEAR A BLOODY THING. Now, like I said, I'm new to this, so is there anything I'm missing?

Somebody, anybody-- tell me what I'm missing!

Thanks in advance!

PS: I've been reading on M-Audio's site about midi interfaces, various soundcards with midi i/o, etc-- would this have any effect on one's ability to hear midi-based sound?

It sounds like you need to enable the track monitor within the Inspector window.

When your track is record enabled you see a red button the in the Inspector. To the right of that you should see an button that turns orange when selected. This lets you monitor incomming sounds.

DFHS is not a MIDI sound. It is a sample library triggered by MIDI data comming from the controller. The driver problems you read from M-audio are not the issue. In order to use DFHS you have to load the instrument and select the midi input and channel from the inspector.

I just tried that and I've still got nothing. Now, the only outputs I have are to my computer speakers and to my PODxt. Do I need another source? I've tried listing the output as PODxt, but nothing comes through it. I've seen people talking about getting monitors to use with a sound module [?]-- do I need that or should I be okay for starting out with what I've got?

Jeez. Didn't know this home recording was going to become the chore it has! But, it'll be worth it once I get everything up and running.

OK, let's get real basic here.

What are your audio connections? What kind of connections are coming from your computer to whatever it is you're listening to? Do you hear other stuff from Cubase or other applications on the computer? And what kind of soundcard do you have?

you have to make a midi track and route the keystation as the midi in and the VSTi as the midi output. I reccomend you read the getting started guide

Good questions. Please answer them.

Thank you all very much for the help. As it turns out, I wasn't selecting the right output in Cubase, so the sound wasn't coming through. I'm now routing it through the Wavetable, which maps to the soundcard. I kept looking for my actual soundcard name and that threw me off.

I'm such a newb. Ha.

To answer your questions, though, I only have to valid outputs at this point-- my soundcard [which is just a stock soundcard that came with the computer] and my PODxt. My inputs are the PODxt and the midi controller. The only thing I'm having trouble with now is that when I use the midi controller, it's triggering Cubase's stock drum sound, not the DFHS. I'm still sorting through the manuals, so I'm sure there's something I'm missing.

This seems like a great forum-- I'm sure you guys will get tired of my questions soon! Thanks again, everyone.
