Hi there,

O.K., this may seem like a really stupid and basic question but I'm new to home recording so bear with me :-

I've got a multitrack recorder which I'm getting on quite well with and I'm going to buy a drum machine in a couple of weeks ( probably the Alesis SR 16). The multitrack has a seperate MIDI in/out connection and the instructions say to connect the MIDI out from the Alesis to the MIDI in on the multitrack. Sound simple so far?

I just phoned the guitar store I was going to buy the Alesis from to check out the MIDI connections, and the guy started going on about the hard drive not picking up any signal or something, totally confusing me.

So the question is can I plug the Alesis in and record onto my ( or any other ) multi track recorder and get a signal on to disk or do I have to buy the same brand as my multitrack ( a Roland) ?

By the way my multitrack is digital and can MIDI synch with , for example, a drum machine

Thanx in advance

Scott

Yes, and yes. Midi independent of brand.

Mind you that midi is not actually sound, just musical data (notes and such). The device receiving the data has to produce the sound, and a multitracker is not such a device. A synthesizer, or sound module would be.

you will need to differentiate midi as a sequencer clock (MTC: Midi time code) and tempo clock (Midi clock) they are two different things. The drum machine will most likely only accept clock and it wont sync unless the multitracker sends clock, which it probably does not. See what the manual says

SR16 can be sync'd to multitracker

In my experience most m/trackers can send MIDI clock - which is what the SR16 needs.
Try this: Connect the MIDI OUT of the M/Tracker to the SR16 MIDI in. Connect the audio out from the SR to the M/Tracker.

These connections will let you do 2 things
1. Slave the SR to the M/tracker (the M/tracker is then the tempo master).
2. Record the sound from the SR.

If you don't want to sync the drums then just programme the song on the SR, record it to the M/Tracker, then overdub your other tracks. Simple - but you are then stuck with the drum track. If you sync the drum machine you can change the drum track at any time.

I often use the SR sync'd to my AW2400.

Thanx again for the help

The M/tracker can send MTC and sync with other devices, I'm sure it sends/recieves a clock as well. I've been reading up on the manual as well, but Carelessorc seems to have nailed it in one paragraph
