MIDI What!?!?!?
Hey guys, I read your thread about eMagic Logic Audio software, and even though this is COMPLETELY unrelated, i hope you can shead some light on this for me. I have recently entered into the relm of "computer based recording." Before I had only recorded with analogue 4 tracks, real to real, etc... And now I have found myself living in Munich Germany away from my entire band and any english speaking person. So I have decided to try to go it alone and everyone has pointed me towards computer based software and MIDI stuff. At first, I must admit, I resisted but now see that it is an incredible medium for recording. Anyway, I am a relative beginner when it comes to computers and computer music. However, yesterday I went out and bought a computer. It has 866MHz RAM, Pent III, 40 GB Hard D, CD-RW Burner, And Windows Meli. Edition.
I also bought a Roland JV 1010 sound module/sunth. And a MIDI Master Keyboard. I have eMagic Logic Audio Gold 4.5 (remember I am in Germany where this software is made and heavily marketed). Now that is ALL I have. Only the computer, the sound module, and the master keyboard. What else do I need to make all this stuff work together? Please excuse my stupidity, but I have no access to english speaking people other than the internet. And it is a jungle in here. I have read and printed out 10,000 pages of MIDI interface/Audio Interface stuff. Sound card this, Pre-amp that. Mixer this, DAT deck that. Here is my needs. What do I need?: (excuse the dumb rhyme)
I want to record my acoustic guitar either via a Microphone (I have a great $1,000 condensor mic) or with one of those clip in pick-ups. At least two guitar tracks per song.
I want to use my MIDI keyboard, and Roland JV 1010 to generate the Bass lines and the drum tracks for my songs. I will play both with the keys and then tweek them and quantasize them etc... Then come back and lay in my guitar tracks by (hopefully) direct-in into the computer like I always did with my analogue set up. Then add effects later in the software.
Now the problem is... on my analogue set ups, I had Mic-ins. Effect sends, Aux ins, guitar inputs, phantom power, trim, pad, etc.... how do I get all these things for a computer? I looked on the back of my computer and didn't see a single 1/4 RTS (stereo) jack. Much less a MIDI in. What do I need to acomplish what I have started? I mean products AND BRANDS. Please don't say, "man you need a MIDI interface." And nothing more. Because I don't know what the diffrence between the MIDI-man Delta-66 sound card and the Creamware, or the Aark 20/20 is. With
my Roland JV 1010 do I need more than ONE MIDI in? I have seen MIDI interfaces with 4 in 4 out, 8 in 8 out etc... Why? To look at them they look pointless anyway. On the front there is the MIDI hole (Input) and on the back there is just another MIDI hole (Output). How does that help me plug it into my computer that doesn't have the same kind of hole (input)?
I also think I might need an audio interface. What is that? What I am asking is... do I need to buy a: Sound card, MIDI interface, AND an Audio interface, AND EVEN STILL a mixer? I will worry about a CD burner leter. I don't know if the CD burner on the computer is good enough or not. Anyways, PLEASE guys come to the rescue. I have the money, just no one to ask. And if I read ONE MORE word on the internet about MID interfaces and Audio interface and which ones are the best and which ones I need, donb't need, might need, deffinitly want etc.. then I will vomit. I write simple rock songs and just want to record them. I wanted a hard disc recorder (Roland VS 1880 or Yamahy
AW 4416) but was talked into a computer set up because I realyized that both of the above mentioned products are themselves nothing but computers. But thex had all the inputs and outputs I needed. What do I need to buy to have all the inputs that these things had? Sound card? Ok thanks guys.
Really thanks,
Mike
P.S. I am going to post this same message on another "catagory" so if you see it again please disregard it.
