midi mapping/configuration

Hi - I know this has been delt with endlessly... If someone cd just point me to the best source for me to read I'd appreciate it. Not sure exactly how to narrow it down to look in archives.

uh... my message above somehow got sent before I finished:
I use Jammer as a sequencer & the Roland VSC for sound - all GM 2. If I expand into Reason or some soft synth, I never understood midi mapping or configuration or whatever i have to do to get set up. And the Jammer tutorial is hard for me to follow. If you cd point me to the best step by step source to study I will do my homework, or any other advice is appreciated as well.
Also does the new soft synth then take the place of the VSC as if it were a hardware module? Thanks!!!

First of all, Reason is not just 'some soft synth', it's as many soft synths as your computer can handle and you need to put together a compatable midi file right from the start. I'm pretty sure Jammer is not ReWire capable, so that's not an option.

Here are links to two good articles on midi basics - part one and part two. They may be a little too basic for you, but we can all use a refresher course now and then...

Yes and no. In the case of Reason you are dealing with many, many more options and possiblilties than GM2 is capable of. If you read in the Jammer documentation that it will support VSTi's (soft synths that conform to the VST standard) go here and search for Triangle II, Synth One, Superwave 8, Free Alpha and any other free synth you can find.

Thanks for the help - I'll start right in w those articles. I don't think Jammer is a VST host - I'll check. But I think I've gone about as far as I can w Jammer anyway. My audio recorder is Cakewalk GT Pro. I doubt if that's set up for Rewire... Reason is a workstation all by itself, if I understand correctly. Maybe I'm better off just using that as my main recording environment?? I cd import anything I record in GTP to Reason.?

Anyway in that case I still don't understand if I will need a module of some sort to provide sound?

Soft synths fill the role of modules - they all have sound sources of varying types and kinds. Reason has all of it's sounds built in and they're very good ones. You might want to consider looking at getting a host sequencer which is both VSTi and ReWire compatable like Tracktion. Download the demo and see if you like it as much as I do.

Very similar in concept, but it features full audio tracks, support for MANY plugin formats, features rewire (as host or client), and can be loaded into other programs as either VSTi or DXi (great for transporting your stuff to other sequencers).
