You can't do that from a MIDI connection and probably can't make a transfer of samples between these two pieces at all.

The sound samples reside in ROM, so to get the sounds into the Alesis would require some sort of storage device, and as far as I can tell, the SR18 doesn't support anything like that.

Thanks for your help ErichS, I find that although I can use the patterns from the Alesis sr18 there are a number of drum patterns in my keyboard that perfectly fit certain songs, I also have the roland sonic cell which uses usb storage maybe theres an alternate way of doing it using that device, also are there websites I can download patterns to save in the user section in the Alesis sr18??

thanks again

I see now - you are looking to transfer patterns (i.e. not sound samples) between the two units. Unfortunately there still does not appear to be a lot of flexibility here. As best I can tell from the manual, the SR16 will only accept/play MIDI patterns in SYS EX format specific to the SR16. SYS EX transfers can be made via MIDI but the code from the Yamaha will probably not work on the SR16.

MIDI is not my strong point but you could try using the Yamaha as a controller to the Alesis (i.e. plug MIDI out from Yamaha to MIDI in on Alesis. Play the pattern on the Yamaha but record sound from the Alesis).

Also, if you are using a software sequencer you could record a performance from the Yamaha and play it back through the Alesis. In both cases some of the drum mapping will likely be different so results may vary.

I did a quick search on the web for user groups and patterns for the SR16 but didn't find much.

What model keyboard are you using?

Hi ErichS, thanks again for your help, my keyboard is a bit on the old side but still works pretty well although the floppy drive onboard gave up some time ago, its a yamaha psr1700!! and my drum machine is the newer model, alesis sr18..

Hi ErichS.. Ive solved my problem transfering patterns, I have a rack of cd's containing a wealth of midi sounds from actual songs to drum sounds, I saved them onto a usb pen, plugged it into my roland sonic cell, went midi out from sonic cell to midi in on alesis, played drum sound on s/c and recorded on alesis and you just play/record the first bar and thats it, when you play it back on alesis it keeps repeating that section so for now thats a big step in the right direction, I can now work with that pattern now its on board... you were right re drum mapping when I tried it on my yamaha it just sounded awful but through s/c it was perfect...

Hello Kim,

I just recently purchased the Alesis SR18 as well. I just wanted to know how you got other sounds into it? I'm looking to sample my own sounds into it, but can't seem to figure the thing out. Thanks for your time, cheers.
