Hi! I would like to work my songs up in MIDI, at home, and then go to a studio and have most of my MIDI sequences *converted* to Audio... is this possible? I heard about it from a few people at music school, but haven't seen anything about it anywhere else on the web. Does anyone know what this is called?

The process is that some/most professional studios have libraries of piano/guitar/string/drum sounds - a programme reads the MIDI information, pulls that sound from the library and then gives it back to you in Audio.

ANY information about this is greatly appreciated !! Thank you!!!

I guess the thing is "some studio's"
But yes it can be done. Midi data can be played thru any midi device and played back as audio.

One potential downfall of going to a studio to have this done is that the sounds you worked with might not be available to you. This would apply if you were a synth programmer and create your own patches and tweak the sounds to be exactly whatyou want. Then going to a studio would introduce the issue of making sure they had the same hardware and/or sound sets that you have.

On the flip side, they are likely to have tons of better MIDI instruments than the typical individual does and so can vastly improve on what you could do at home. This would apply if you are emulating real instuments but all you have is a little Yamah PSR keyboard or a Sound Canvas box or a SoundBlaster.

*converted* to Audio
Just in case you didnt know, you can turn Midi into audio yourself by playing your sequencer into Cakewalk etc. to a two track stereo wave file. If you have the time or inclination you can also Synch each Individual midi track to have seperate audio files for each instrutment. You can also add external effects to midi tracks to make them sound better. Dont forget Soundfonts also. Of course nothing beats the real thing.
Heres a link to a song that is all midi data from a Soundblaster 5.1 with external effects added. No Im not Plugging the song.
