I have 3 VS-880's, 2 midi keyboards, and 2 rack-mounted sound modules. I don't use a midi patch bay, I have everything connected in-line using the midi-thru of one machine to the midi-in of the next one. So far I haven't had any latency problems generated by this setup (only latency problems are caused by Cakewalk and the slow processor in my JV-2080). The only inconvenience I have is switching from composing to recording. For composing, I have midi-in connector to my PC connected back to the last keyboard in the chain. For tracking, I unplug that and plug it into the midi-out of the VS-880 I'm using.

Seems to me all you need to do is plug your D5 into one of the midi-in jacks, and then connect your other sound modules to two of the midi-outs. Unless you need the chain to come back to a sequencer or something, the chain can be unidirectional just for controlling the other hardware.
