Midi cable with the Delta 1010

I have a midi cable that has an "in" and an "out" split on one end and a male joystick port on on the other end . (i'm not sure if they are all like this.)

I can't really use this cable on my delta and on my keyboard can I?

Are there other types of midi cables?

A garden-variety midi cable has 2 ends and does not have an 'in' or 'out' end designation as midi data can pass in, out or thru depending on how it is connected in your system.

There's no reason you shouldn't be able to use that midi cable. Just ignore the joystick port, hook the 'in' to the 'in' and the 'out' to the 'out'. And if for some reason that doesn't work, go to a music store and plunk down $10 each for some regular ol' midi cables!

I don't think the In and Out MIDI connectors on the split end and wired to each other -- they are two ends of two MIDI connections coming from the joystick adapter. So you can't use it as a MIDI cable. It's for using the MIDI interface on SoundBlaster-type soundcards, which shares the joystick connector on the card itself.

Alchuck: exactly. It worked great on my old joystick port but I'm using a delta 1010 and don't have the joystick port.

so should it have the 4 midi connectors in total? (two on each end?) or are they seperate cables with 1 one connector on each end?

I've never seen them bundled in a snake. Get two separate MIDI cables.

As long as it's shorter than 15 feet, any MIDI cables will do just fine It's very rare you'll have quality issue with MIDI cables. It is possible, but very rare. If you're not sure, just grab branded one (Roland, etc). They're pretty cheap I think.

If you're talking about 'Line loss', that is one of the most pervasive and false midi myths. I've used regular ol' midi cables up to 40' long with no 'line loss', no 'added latency' and no 'additional delay'. This is one flaw that midi does NOT have.

That's like saying that in order to use my dial-up modem I have to be within 15 feet of my phone jack.
