Mics to avoid like the Plague

Ill go ahead and get the whole Nady and Behringer lines out of the way.
In fairness, I honestly don't think Behringer makes any microphone that compares for sheer cheap wretchedness to much of the low-end Nady stuff.

It's just atrocious. Like this thing:

I'm sure you can get decent sounds out of an AKG3000 after EQ'ing the crap out of it and spending alot of time trying to make it sound like it should. Why not change it out for a good mic that sounds good off the get go?

There are plenty of mics that sound better and are cheaper that I'd put up waaaay before the 3000 on most applications:

Studio Projects C1 <- blows it away
Rode NT3
SM57
AT 2020
Hell, I'd probably use a boundary mic before I used that turd again.

I will agree with Behringer and Nady mics are complete garbage, regardless of the model

Absolute generalisations like this are neither true nor helpful.
They're not.

On the other hand, it does a brand like Nady (and a number of others) no good to sell junk with generic Chinese 87¢ plastic elements of rock-bottom quality in superficially attractive cases as though they were real microphones at hysterically inflated MSRPs.

That does more to comprehensively ruin a reputation than anything I can think of, and it's nobody's fault but theirs.

Nady's low end ribbon mics are okay...not *great*, but not terrible either. The only experience I have with Behringer mics is the B-1, which I thought was awful. I only tried it on a few vocals and an acoustic guitar though.

That Behringer does make a mic to keep arround for when folks want to borrow a mic...but its no SM58...and I can tell you that the best $20 mic Ive ever bought is the 5 SM57s I bought a few years ago.

It really depends on the genre. If you're into Rap/Hip-Hop or Screamo I recommend you avoid any mic that works. If you don't have any broken mics, tape the switch in the off position with several layers of duct tape, or just snip the mike cable in two with wire cutters. The brand/model of mic doesn’t really matter so much in this case.

:)

Did you use the Nady Ribbon on vocals and acoustic guitar also? Did you use it on anything else?

I used the RSM-2 on drum OH, acoustic guitar and electric guitar...all the usual suspects. Like I said, it wasn't terrible, especially on electric. It's very dark, even for a ribbon...dark as in "lacking detail", not the usual warmer sound you're looking for with a ribbon mic. I found that taking the internal screen off helped some, but it still didn't compare to my Fat Heads. Then again, the Fat Heads are like twice the cost, so I'm not sure that's a fair comparison.

Ha ha! YES! Any person who makes music in a genre I don't care for is a DICK!

Now those Hip Hop kids have checkbooks too...Ill record my momma farting with a Behringer if there was money in it.

And any recording engineer that makes a buck recording a genre they don't care about is a ...... Especially if they advertise as specializing in outdoor recordings, but can't afford a box with a window to handle a little preciipitation. Are the homeless better off than "you"? I mean seriously, it's raining, perhaps an umbrella might help. A rag, a ziplock bag, something more than a little faith in a particular religion anyway.

While a lot of people love them, I absolutely can NOT stand the Audio Technica Midnight Blue MB4K...

Every pre or board I've used them with always sounds tinny...

The project studio I frequent uses an API Lunchbox with the Neve 1073 clone modules, can't recall the model name, but even THOSE can't make the Midnight Blues sound good to me.

I'm pretty sure that Midnight Blue was an answer to the Beta Green line by shure...some kind of cheap alterintive...just like that PG series they are selling now.
